Painting Convertible Pump Body Area

Just wondering how others prep and paint the half blind area of the body where the convertible top pump and upper shock mounts are.  Pretty sure I can clean, scuff, and treat surface rust okay, but getting a paint gun to cover the inside areas looks challenging. 


Any tools, tips, and techniques you've used would be appreciated.

Outside of a lot (yes, it is two words) of masking, I can't think of anything else. That inner section looks like "blackish primer" applied after stamping but before the parts were welded in place. Then there's "some" over-spray from the assembly line painting. You can do that (after your masking is removed for the primer) to make it look "assembly line". I've "invested" in an electric sprayer that is easier to maneuver in tight spaces. Maybe a touch-up type air gun would fit.

Well, I'll never ding the original painters for not getting complete coverage of all those hidden spaces, what a pain in the butt!  I used my smaller cheap AeroPro 5500 touch-up gun, but I should have gotten the disposable cups so I could turn the gun upside down as needed.  And a 90 degree elbow at the air inlet may have helped.  Not the best coverage, but I'm okay with it.  A couple pics.

Thanks for sharing.  This always interests me how others are bringing back their cars. Not my year but I wonder what your car may have looked like out of the factory.  We know they were pumping out cars left and right so not getting full paint coverage was the norm I suspect.

Yes just like trunk areas there were a lot  ::) of bare or thin exterior paint areas. Often these areas are over done (don't care for the "over restored" term when it just not correct) and every nook and corner has a nice prefect coat of paint. Often this can't be avoided if the builder/owner has chosen to blast the car down to bare metal since it adds a texture to the metal
