Accelerator Gas Pedal Screw - 9873 Design Change

NOTE: The following first five posts were separated from another thread so that this discussion would not get in the way of the original focus of that thread


Looks like mine,  the threads are about the same length as the unthreaded section unlike the Scott Drake part where the threads are longer than unthreated section.

Just for the heck of it and on a related subject, does your retainer have continuous threads or is the, for lack of a better term at the moment :) a machined cut through the middle ones on one side?

Not completely sure I understand you question but here's some info.

The gas pedal arm bracket that comes through the firewall is threaded on the arm that goes inside the interior.

The pedal has an AY23D date and the 2 C57A-9767-B and C57A-9735-A numbers. Come to think of it my build date is April 5. 23D means April 23 correct? That seems to be an issue.

Nonetheless the reason I wasn't too worried about destroying the pedal is the rubber was already cracked and falling apart.  I have been able to get a new pedal with a C23 date in great shape for just $15.

As for the retainer portion that I had to remove from the pedal it has a larger hole on one side and smaller on the opposite.  Neither of which are threaded.  Here are some pictures.

The slot is for a nylon insert as Ford hardware part number 380503-S101. I just found a Ford service box of 10 with 7 remaining.

Then the logic next question would be when was the insert introduced? And wonder if this version was used as a service part for earlier models/part

I didn't find any info on that, but 380503-S replaced 379538-S on 6/1/66, for 1966 Mustangs (ref MPC 68Sec097-P12). Note the difference in thread shoulder length on page 139 of the AMK Guide to Ford Fasteners (3rd ed, see page 137 for drawing) for those two screws. Included is a picture of the Ford Service box for 380503-S101, showing the insert (two are positioned on top of the box. Note the very dull silver/gray finish and the black line of the nylon insert). There's a date of 05/05 on a yellow ID label on the box. Most of the rest is in "Ford code". And last, but not least, is the 1975 MPC page for 9873.
There are two other Ford uses for this screw in the 1975 MPC and that "may" be the key. It's not a direct Mustang service part, but is for others Fords AND can be used on Mustangs.

I fixed the difference definition between 379538-S and 380503-S which is the shoulder length, the non-threaded part under the head of the screw and not thread length. The difference is all of 0.0156 - 1/64th of an inch, which I assume will make tightening the screw easier and more sturdy.

No my original screw does not have a slot for the nylon insert.

No my original screw does not have a slot for the nylon insert.
