68 Metuchen Accelerator Gas Pedal Screw 9873
« on: July 18, 2024, 05:59:14 PM »
I removed (destroyed the head as pictured) my gas pedal screw.  It is a silver color and rusted to the bracket on the underside of the pedal.  I believe the finish is listed as S101. It seems you can only get the S2 P&O finish screw.  What's correct for my car? Small detail but nice to get it right.

Interesting detail though,  when you zoom in on the shaft you see a line and some dark color.  Did my screw loose it's P&O finish over time? The shoulder dark color is rust where the screw bonded with the pedal bracket.

You neglected to use the Ford part number.

Guilty.  9873 is the number from the assembly manual.  380503-S8 is what I saw in the Hardware spreadsheet and attached picture. S8 being zinc plated which makes sense for silver color.  I don't recall where I saw S101 finish.  Help!

Yes but is that the correct finish? I have what I believe is an original part, pictured previously,  that is not P&O. What's correct?

Did you look in this forum's library? Try topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet 67-68". There are two files, one by application (use), the other by part number. All entries have the source referenced.

AMK sells the wrong finish screw. Get a hold of Max and tell him. It's not the first time he's sold hardware with the wrong finish.

I did check both spreadsheets. 380503-S8 is listed as GAS PEDAL-ACCELERATOR ARM but interesting it's only listed for year 67, 68 column is not marked. The finish is of course S8.

And in the AMK Ford fasteners guide page 139 380503 is listed with just S finish so I'm not sure what exact finish from that entry.

I do have 2 screws now,  the first from NPD and the second from Magic Valley Mustang.  The second one is a Scott Drake part and it's P&O so I'll remove the P&O from that one.

PS One other note.  Apparently as of April 25, 1968, the pin screw changed.  I've seen C8OZ-9873-1A being listed and it's a silver pin that looks very different from the one I have.  I've attached a picture from NPD.

I would suggest to do some more research on this finish for confirmation. This conversation has me second guessing myself because I admit I thought 65-68 were all PO. I do know at least for sure some of the years the screw was PO. 68 my be different or it may be a different vendor thing but I would like to hear others input.

Here's again my vote for S8 zinc plate finish and picture of screw I removed with much force.

That screw is shown in the "1968 Mustang Chassis Assembly Manual" (AM0025) pgs 63 and 64, but with a Ford engineering base number of "9873". The supporting document for "9873" is not readily available so it was not listed in the spreadsheets. In the 1975 edition of "Ford Car Parts" (aka MPC), in the text section 97 page 35, the service replacement for 1968 is 380503-S8 (irony not withstanding). The NPD drawing is very likely based on the Ford drawing so an assembly line part is available. However, the NPD drawing show a different type of drive but without any other details.
And in the AMK Ford fasteners guide page 139 380503 is listed with just S finish so I'm not sure what exact finish from that entry.
There are no finishes listed in the "AMK Guide TO Ford Fasteners" for any specific item. Too many variables.
I don't recall where I saw S101 finish.
The -S101 is listed in "Ford Standard And Utility Parts Catalog, January 1969" (AM0205) edition, on page 34, as having a Nylon Insert. Where it is used is not specified.

I would keep that picture compiled in your binder of this cars details to be kept with the car when judging . That way if there is a question the picture will help answer.

Depending on where the part was listed the S2 would be the finish but it could be the finish of the service replacement or the original. Example Assembly Manual verse a later MPC. Of course with the assembly manual the finish or part could have been used after the page the information was printed on was replaced or revised

Took a look and because of the location no clear pictures of one installed. Recall looking at a box of service replacement ones years ago but don't know that the finish was correct for a 68 NJ built car

Side by side,  the Scott Drake part (top) is very different from the one I pulled off my car (bottom). The head on the SD part is thinner,  the threads are longer,  and there is the groove on the threads.

Out of curiosity, what type of drive is on the lower screw, the one you "damaged"?
