Hello All,
I am seeking a pair of front N.O.S. Motorcraft AutoFLEX XD Shock absorbers for my '69 conv.
The kit number should be C7ZZ-18124-E and the ID Marking should be C6PF-18077-FH
These are referenced as AX-129's

It appears on the rears that I have, AX-124's a date code of 3E72. Is this really a date code or something else?
If it is a date code, can someone decipher it for me??

Can I assume that you are aware that the Autoflex XD shocks are generic service replacement shocks that are different then the shocks that came on your car from the assemblyline?

That is a date code. Shocks were needed long after the car left the assembly line so the year is either 1973 or 1983. The month is E so May. The day of the month is 7, and the shocks were assembled on second shift (2). So it is either May 7, 1973 or May 7, 1983.

Yep, understand that. These are probably what you would have purchased at the dealership. I would guess it would be nearly impossible to find ANY original assembly line shocks now that would be usable.

If you were to find them they can be rebuilt and there are also vendors that can make them

Originals are still out there . Not easy to find but Restorers come up with them for concours restorations consistently. Also originals can be rebuilt or correct looking generics modified to have the correct stamped information as mentioned. FYI the replacement shock in concours regardless of if a Motorcraft Autoflex or generic aftermarket are subject to the same deductions . The most important thing is the shape of the shock compared to assemblyline and if it has the correct type thread depending on year. The markings if not Autolite (on a 69/70) would be best to be filled in and made invisible for the least amount for deduction liability.

If I recall correctly rear AutoFlex often have a number of exterior visible features that will give away that they are not factory.  Better to go with an old Monroe IMHO than some AutoFlex IMHO. Guess further discussion and possibly pictures should be directed to a new thread if we want to dive into this more
