Carpet Color
« on: July 02, 2024, 10:55:32 PM »

I have been in an email conversation with someone who is restoring a 1968 GT/CS, they are at the point where a decision needs to be made on the color of the interior carpet. The Marti Report doesn't list the carpet color. The seats are Nugget Gold and paint is Highland Green. Does anyone know what color the carpet would have been.

Most likely dark brown like the dash pad.

I will have to ask about the dash color. Should the carpet color match the dash pad color?

I have a 68 Nugget Gold interior car. My dash is brown so I've installed brown carpet.

But I've been told by a number of individuals the carpet should be gold. The package tray on my car has been repainted gold to go with the gold seats and gold door trim.  We've even debated what color that should be a while back.

Lastly I do believe I've seen cars with nugget gold interior with gold carpet.

Honestly, I do not have a for sure answer. I would not deduct for gold or brown (remember if you do not know for sure the car gets the benefit of the doubt). We will have to be on the lookout for an unrestored to know for certain but maybe not. The tough part in some of these situations Ford may have done both colors because one or the other was unavailable when the car was assembled.

What is your interior code? That may be helpful

Because I was wondering, I took a look at the MPC.  I do see that there is a carpet color called "Nugget Gold" (picture 1) which would seem to be a slam dunk.  However, there is no direct reference made from interior codes to carpet, unlike that of seats, door panels, headliner (picture 2).  Just observations, not calling on this play.

I just received a picture of the dash pad and it appears to be black. I have asked for the trim code.

Hard to tell black from brown in a picture.

The car owner says the dash is black, and the trim code is 2Y. According to the MPC the carpet is A1Y, does this mean that the carpet is Gold?

I can tell you that the saddle interior cars should have a very dark brown carpet, so it would seem to rule that out.

1968 Shelbys very often are restored with the wrong carpets.

We need a library of correct colors for each interior code.

+1 It looks like there would be an interior matrix somewhere. Ford must have had some data for which carpet went with what trim.

My Nugget Gold Interior car is also trim code 2Y. At first glance I thought my dash was black too but after looking more closely and at the correct angle, my dash pad is definitely a dark brown.

Thanks David, maybe after a good cleaning it will turn brown. I'll question the owner if it could be a dark brown. with a 2Y trim Brown would seem a more likely color.
