So today, I contacted TCP global about getting some textured paint for the hood stripes on my ?70 Mach One. The salesman looked up my application in his database and recommended a #9381 paint. This number corresponded with a number that was an old Ditzler/PPG number that was recommended by forum members, but was no longer available from them. It seemed like just what I needed, but when I mentioned it to my body man, he had a very strong negative reaction to putting this acrylic lacquer paint over a new urethane clear coat. Now, I?m pretty confused about what to do next. Are there any experienced body guys that could weigh in on this? I would appreciate it. Thanks.

I have sprayed that exactly that way many times with no issues. I do spray a DP90LF  sealer coat first. Then spray the textured black out. I never have any lifting or wrinkling issues.

Thank you for your response. It helps a lot. He was certain that it would wrinkle. Maybe I will go back and tell him about your experience.

The different paints have different solvent systems and one can affect the other, especially when it's fresh paint. It can be done but mixing paint systems is a traditional no-no and that is why many shops don't like doing it or will be reluctant to put any warranty on it. You can accept the risk (apart from shoddy workmanship) and that will make to body guys happier.

Applying an epoxy primer first as recommended will isolate the incompatible paints from each other. Your body guy is correct when he says that lacquer over catalized enamel won't work well.

I understand how you're stuck with certain paint systems because of the stripes and the more time you can leave the clear coat to cure, the better off you will be. I know it's not ideal but you might have to leave the paint a month or two to harden up before it's OK and your body man will know this.

Do what 69BOSSNUT said. He painted my textured hood stripe on my BOSS almost 5-1/2 years ago now and it still look like new, zero shrinkage, lifting or wrinkling.
