1967 428 PI Replacement Distributor Advice

I currently have an electronic aftermarket distributor on my 1967 GT500. I am not getting the right advance from it. I want to replace it with a more original type. I think the originals were dual point? I see some used on EBay and see some reproductions are made. I would prefer original date coded rebuilt. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Regular production 67 GT500 PI engine came with a duel point mechanical advance dist  marked C5AF-E. No vacuum advance was used on the factory duel point distributor. I am unaware of any genuine looking reproductions. Typical duel point conversions which may be what you are referring to as a reproduction  take a single point distributor and block off the vacuum advance port . That conversion is easily seen as the poor looking facsimile that it is.

There seem to be a lot of the C5AF-E units out there, even NOS ones.  Ford must have offered these over the counter for a long time.  I have probably had a dozen of them sent to me to work on and happen to have one now.  The ones you find won't be date correct (most likely) but the date is on the back side when installed and hard to see.  Watch eBay and you will be able to buy one if you want to go that direction.

Some very early production could be FOMOCO but most were Autolite

I see two on Ebay right now that look date correct for my 1/26/67 build date. One is 65AF-121(with 3 blank spots after it)-E, dated 6M21 the other is C5AF-12127-E dated 6M12. Wouldn't M be the 13th month though? Both up there at $1,000 each. Are these correct for my build date? Thanks.

"I" is not used in the date code cipher. Yes ether would work. If buying off Ebay you will have to play the ebay odds roulette wheel when deciding if they need anything or not. you of course can blindly accept the sellers claims unless they are a known quantity. Restored can mean different things to different people. For example restored can mean the outside is cleaned up and a new set of points and condenser. Restored can also mean   taken apart, inspected ,lubricated, clearances checked and advance curve checked along with the other things.

Just as a data point, GT500 #1183 has a 1/26/67 (SJ) build date.  The distributor date code is 6M1 and it happens to be a FoMoCo.

On closer look, I see that #817 and #1183 are from the same group of 32 cars in DSO 2566.

Interesting that there are found FOMOCO marked distributors out there with dates after Autolite marked ones and vice versa. This all settled out by approximately March of 67 . At least by evidence that I have seen.

Not puzzling to me just another isolated interesting anomaly. Although that is the latest such date code related to a FOMOCO casting that I have heard of enough of them happened that it isn't surprising that a few ended up outside the typical range of those appearances IMO. What would really be puzzling would be to find a Autolite marked one with a early 65 or early 66 date. ;)

I bit the bullet and spent $1,100 with tax and shipping on the rebuilt carb dated December 1966 so a close match for my 2/67 car. Thanks for all of the input.
