correct paint for 68.5 Mustang CJ Hood stripe
« on: June 10, 2024, 11:47:23 PM »
I remember seeing this years ago but am having trouble finding the posts.  I remember two different combinations that people were using for restorations.  It showed the brands of paint to be mixed.  Any help would be great.  Thanks

The original stripe and scoop on unrestored cars that were painted were actually a gloss black, however most people will paint them a semi gloss to satin /trim black.  I dont have a formula for that but need to decide first if you want to go with the gloss.

I am not an expert on the CJ cars, but I restored one a few years ago that was black, and it had a SG black stripe. The SG black may have been because it was a black car.

Yes....you would think with a black car they would be different.  But on any other color they were a gloss.  I am going on unrestored original paint as a reference, not a restored car.

Not exactly the same thing but it is factory documented on 70 Shelby's which had black hood stripes that the hood stripes were gloss on every color except Black Jade which was a very dark shade. The black hood stripes were painted a eggshell or semigloss on that dark color so that they would stand out from the background .

+1, As the owner of a 68 CJ from 12/68 the hood stripe was a gloss black on my white car, and black cars had a semi-gloss black looking stripe.

All of the original 1968 1/2 Mustang hoods that I have seen have been semi-gloss black.

The brittany blue hood in the attached picture is the origal from my late April Dearborn built car with (then) 26,500 miles. The two green hoods are from original cars and the attached snip from a feature article in the November, 1968 issue of Rodder & Super Stock magazine clearly shows semi-gloss even though they called it flat black.

Another picture from an original late April Dearborn built 1968 1/2. The stripe is definitely semi gloss on this car.
On the other hand, Don Fotti's mid July Dearborn car that I believe still has orignal paint appears to have a gloss black stripe so maybe there was a change sometime over the course of production.

Follow up: Don stated that his car has never been repainted. He has owned the car since 1972. Don stated that the glossy appearance of the stripe may be due to waxing / polishing the hood and stripe over the years.

One the things that seems to come with owning and keeping up of an original paint car is the often consent up keep and cleaning of the paint. Plenty of examples where painted details original not glossy became that way over time. Sometimes this shows when comparing the more exposed to the less exposed area. Example engine compartment walls and inner fender panels where the upper edge where they attach to the fenders becomes polished for so much rubbing and wiping over the years and the harder to get to does not. The reverse is also found at times were the areas difficult to get to, area between the hood scoop and hood can get duller than original as exposure to the sun creates difference and look where it does not get touched

Think I have some unrestored examples that I look for and post

Yes that sure does look like the low gloss (same paint company number) used on the 69 hood black out when they are clean  ::)

To add to the picture collection an original owner, original paint San Jose built 68 1/2

That's not a 1968 1/2 hood scoop so that car has been worked on at some point.

So what is the "tell' that suggests that its not an original scoop?

Car is local so will have to ask the family about that detail when I see them again

Jeff, the recesses on the back end of the of the scoop were not part of a 68.5 part.
