381863-S2 clip nut
« on: May 16, 2024, 03:09:14 PM »
Trying to determine the proper nut for the 3 supports in front of the radiator that hold up the grill and are used to attach the bottom of the grill.  The nut in my picture on the left was on the RH and LH outer supports.  The nut on the right was in the center support.  I'm guessing the right one is incorrect.

PS it appears to be the same as 45144-S2 and is used on the trim molding piece above the bumper.  I found that one on AMK site.

First: Congratulations on using a Ford hardware part number in your post. It seem that many Forum member are afraid to do that.
Now for the good news. The clip nut you need is the one on the right in your picture. It is available from AMK as Ford hardware part number 381863-S32 (note finish, -S32, black or olive drab enamel), AMK stock number B-12248 (6ea for $4).
This is documented in this Forums' library under "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet 67-68".

Thanks Jim. I found the item in the spreadsheet that I have been referring to often but I couldn't figure out which AMK part was correct. How do I make the leap from Spreadsheet to AMK? I seem to recall for some items there is often the AMK item listed but not in this case.

Also, I did find AMK part nr B-12251 that lists 45144 in the heading and the clip looks like the one on the left. It's also the Ford part number for the clips on the grille opening finish piece.

I also received these clip nuts when I ordered new grille opening pieces from NPD. I didn't use them because they don't look correct at all.  The nuts are yellow dichromate and smaller than the previous one pictured.  If they are ok I suspect I could remove the yellow dichromate finish.

The AMK guide to fasteners has a comprehensive listing of the Ford fastener numbers that refer back to the categories in the guide.

That's one book I don't have,  yet.

NPD - AMK Guide is listed under their stock number L-41, $32.86. It's the third edition.

Or AMK for $32 even and that way I can order those other few bits I need.  I always seem to end up not needing $30 worth of fasteners to meet their minimum.  I wish they wouldn't do that and just fill all orders regardless of the size.  I know time is money but a sale is a sale. I'm done venting.

In this "capital" oriented, "capitalist" country of America, the "business" of "business" is to make "money". The truth does make you want to vent sometimes.

I get all of my AMK fasteners from NPD.  I never have any problem spending 30 buck there lol.
