What is the correct paint for Mach 1 rocker mouldings?
« on: May 03, 2024, 11:42:51 PM »
Recently, I bought some paint from NPD. It is a very dark charcoal grey that is almost black. The color of my rocker moulding is a much lighter gray. Could someone give me an indication of which one is right, or where I might find the right shade of grey?

I guess you already looked at and compared the pictures of the unrestored 70 Mach I's in that section of the site. Of course digits pictures can be unreliable due to monitor and camera settings but place to start if your comparing light and dark colors

Second one from the top of the list - Dearborn car- has a nice side short and close to compare with  ;)

Recently I purchased and used the paint from NPD and it closely matched the OE paint on my OE rocker trim panels. It was dark charcoal but by no means was it almost black.

A good IMHO way to compare or comment on how dark a Charcoal may be would be to compare the color to the interior "black"/dark charcoal metallic since that is a fairly standard color. Just a thought.  :)

Is this a match to the original, matte-looking dark argent? I too am in the same spot as the OP as the 4 cans I got from NPD are just way too dark and the metallic flake is throwing me off as well. I understand pictures online can be a bit deceiving, but my rocker trim is way too dark with this paint. It doesn?t look bad, but it looks like the common mistake of painting them black and I have way too much time into prep work and blasting to settle on something incorrect and I want to do the car justice.

The back sides of my trim (37k mile original paint car) is completely different than what NPD sells in the can (AP-GPA). Not putting NPD down- I have spent thousands there and have absolutely no complaints. I am almost wondering if the batch got mixed wrong? Or if i made a mistake on the part number? If memory serves, the correct color is dark argent, not this charcoal metallic?

Don?t mean to hijack the thread, but any help would be appreciated!

Here a few pics of my original unrestored 70 Mach 1 rocker moldings. I have owned the car since 9/73 when it had 19,000 original miles. These are how they look after 54 years. My car was built 3/10/70 at Dearborn.

That looks dark to me. They have probably lighten up a little too after 54 years of exposure to the elements. Computer monitors has effects on shade too.

Just figured I'd follow up with this thread to help others in the future, as I've had one heck of a time gathering this information from bits and pieces of different forums, articles and my own car.

I ran across paint code PPG 33053 "Medium Gray Poly", had it mixed locally in a SS Urethane, compared it to the back sides of my rocker moldings, and am very pleased with the match. I believe the existing paint on the backs of the moldings is original, as it's a low mileage all original car. The color is also consistent with the paint under the removable letters and chrome trim pieces throughout- which have never been removed before me. Attached are pictures for comparison showing the backside of a few different pieces of the rocker moldings. Also attached is a comparison of the PPG and the AP-GPA sold by NPD.

The only caveat to the PPG 33053 is the finish- most SS urethanes are a glossy finish, so I will have to bring that down to an "eggshell" or a "near sheen" by having them add flattener. I will update this thread on the amount of flattener used on the final batch when I get a few more samples mixed up and sprayed.

More to follow,

Matthew

I ran across a set of NOS panels at Carlisle. They were definitely a gray color, not a dark charcoal.

Sorry no pictures. It's not a part I was looking for. About 2 years ago, I found a used set of trim for a guy down south. This time I saw 2 used sets and 1 nos. You never know what you may find at Carlisle.
