1968 overhead console
« on: April 21, 2024, 11:44:02 AM »
I am restoring a 1968 Mustang fastback GT with decor interior and an overhead console.

When optioned with decor interior, did the 1968 overhead console come from the factory with a woodgrain insert to match the dash, or was the overhead console plain silver?

All 1968's had the woodgrain applique

The 1967's had the aluminum insert.

The woodgrain vinyl piece was applied to the aluminum insert, and I've seen several fail over the years.  Perhaps yours was coming undone, and someone helped it along the way so that it was not unsightly.

Thinking back to the years when we used to restore a lot of original overhead consoles...
I recall if you peel the woodgrain decal off the aluminum insert on a 1968 overhead, the
alloy was shiny.  I guess Ford saved a few bucks by not having it brushed like the 1967's.
Before reproductions, I remember seeing plenty of shiny 1968's without woodgrain being sold as 1967's!
