68 San Jose Inner Fender Splash Shields

I have couple of questions regarding the correct process for installing Inner Fender Splash Shields. If there are any special notes please let me know

Should there be any seam sealer or dum dum used between the splash shield and the cowl panel or just coverage from the sound deadener



Are these lower fender brackets mounted correctly?




Just confirming that the rubber seal follows the contours of the splash shield or do they overlap the ridge



How far over does the top seal overlap the at the top of the cowl?

Once the fenders are installed I will apply the sound deadener/sealer, based on the photos I have seen on survivor cars

Yes, I use 3M strip calk between the Cowel and splash shield.  I use an original shield to locate the new seals.

Great thanks. My shields are original so I will use the same holes and drill through the new rubbers to install the staples. After that from what I have observed the sound deadener is sprayed in that area

I came across this material that looks identical to the original fender shields. I compared it to some remnants that I had, so I am planning to use the after market pieces I have as a template to cut new shields. Has anyone gone this route before? These have a high thread count compare to the after market that has none, hopefully I have enough material to make all of the shields. Any tips or advice is appreciated. Thanks

Thanks, thats what I thought, but did not see any remaining sealer on mine when I removed them. It does look like the rubber is intended to follow the line of the shield. I will try to find some photos

Be advised that the staples supplied in the replacement kit for my 65-66 Mustangs were a larger diameter than the originals and would not fit the holes in the metal. I made my own from safety wire.

Pictures of mine. To my surprise - I was able to reuse the rubber pieces. I found 409 liquid cleaner worked well on the rubber. Restoring these is quite time consuming. I encourage people to view them.
1968 CJ - Owner and paint original. Dec 67 build in Dearborn. One of 50 135 Cobra Jets. Ford engineering used it for 8 mos. to resolve problems in the 50 early car build. Ford by-passed the normal sign off to get cars to the Winternationals drag race.

I think the fender bracket at the bottom of the splash shield is located on the other side of the splash shield-between the flexible piece and the metal.

Assy Manual for Cougar has caulk on top of splash shield (under apron) as well as on side.

Well hopefully I've got this right. Next the front headlight bucket splash shields. I used the original holes and just drilled the rubber. The staples I made from wire as the ones in the kit are much thicker than originals

Thanks Jeff, glad I asked. Fortunately it is easy to correct as the holes will line up in the same position. How about the fender brackets on the bottom, in a previous post it was suggested that they were in the wrong position. Also should the rubber overlap at the top or should it get trimmed to fit.
