3M 8509 obsolete and unabtainable
« on: February 08, 2024, 05:01:50 PM »
I started to remove my leaking front windshield and had the presence of mind to look around for additional tubes of 3m 8509 Bedding and Glazing compound, since I only have one six year old tube on hand.
No parts store in my area has any of the 3M material, and when you look on the 3M website it says it is obsolete.
The local Napa guy says CR Laurence CRL7708 is equal, but reading the reviews online it appears to never dry out.
Has anyone on this forum use the 7708 material and what did you experience for difficulty installing the glass?

My link to my local stores shows for store pick up order today and pick up tomorrow for all of them as if it is available. However it says "We apologize this item is not available for shipping at this time. However, this item may be purchased at a NAPA store. If the item is not in stock at your local store, then your store associates can order the item for you. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you for shopping at NAPA "- That is as of today in KC.

Windo-weld 8609 was good stuff.  I used it for gluing down the windshield trim on my wife's ASC.

Napa picture is different from the product description/number MMM 08509 Bedding & Glazing.

The NAPA picture shows exactly what I have been using for decades. It's hazmat so there is no shipping - you have to pick it up in your local NAPA store.

The only alternative available is this liquid butyl stuff.  It's sticky/messy like the newer 3M strip caulk:

Depends how it's stored.  I've had tubes for years and seemed fine.

My son found two more in a small town near here. Now we have enough for all of the cars we have in the que.

If you need some, I would start making some calls.

What I recommend is calling your local stores as Mr. Gaines recommended.

It is out of production, but I was able to find 4 tubes that way.  It was on the top shelf in the back storeroom and they had to look for it.  It helped I had pics of what the container looks like.

That worked for me, and I am sure there are lots of stores with old stock sitting on back shelves.

As for it going bad?  I assume that if you have a sealed tube or partial used tube that is capped and inside, it should theoretically last a LONG time.  Since it stays pliable and is subject to extreme weather after used, I would think it would not go bad stored inside on a shelf.  Just my opinion though.

My only question is how many tubes does it take to do one car?

Thanks,
Dan in Kansas

Dan,  i was also wondering how many tubes as i start hunting around  In this blog, i saw mention of 3 tubes to do a 65 windshield.   Might extrapolate from there.

A windshield can be done with 1 tube, maybe another half a tube at most.  3 tubes is enough for 1 car, front/rear windshield.  I also used it for door/qtr water shields.
