Topic: 1967 Coupe Rear Bumper

Looks like my signature car will require a replacement rear bumper after a rear-end collision this past weekend.  The damaged rear bumper on the car has the characteristic slight inward bow in the middle.  (I won't know if the damaged bumper is the original bumper until removed and examined for factory stampings on the underside).

Also, I'll place a WTB ad in the forum.

A Question should I need a new replacement rear bumper:  Does anyone know if the NPD replacement 67 rear bumper has the inward bow, or is it straight?

Sorry to hear that you had trouble.

I do not believe that there was any bow in the rear bumper. I think it is always best to use original Ford parts but the last rear bumper I had plated cost $540.00. If the car is a driver grade car I think the NPD bumper for $206.00 is the way to go. I just got one for my 67 convertible project and am pretty happy with it.

Alas, this 67 rear bumper is probably beyond straightening.  Will likely go with the NPD replacement part.

Seem to recall discussions here in CMF and elsewhere about an inward bow in the factory rear bumper (maybe it was 65-66?).  Will try to find/cite a source.  Perhaps the 67-68 members can inspect their original rear bumpers and tell us what you find.

For my unrestored driver, it's likely I'll be satisfied with a NPD replacement bumper.

I always thought that originals had a slight bow in the bumper.  It is slight and matches bow in trunk lid, about 1/2 - 5/8".

That is true. The replaters have a tendency to make them perfectly straight.

+1, they definitely have a very slight inward bow.  Put on a flat surface, the ends will stick up, maybe a 1/4" to 1/2"

Both my cars with original Ford bumpers have the curve.  I suppose one could call NPD and inquire if the repos are that way.  As Bob says some bumper shops will mistakenly "straighten" that out.

Yes, guys you are correct that there is a slight bow in the rear bumper. I recently had one on my bench and did not look close enough to see the slight bow and replied to the original posters question that they were strait. Today I checked an original and the NPD reproduction and found they both had slight bows. Sorry for the bad information.
