68 SJ 390 PS Power Steering Hose Index Bracket
« on: October 31, 2023, 05:26:01 PM »
Looking to confirm if the 68 SJ 390 PS Power Steering Hose Index Bracket below is correct for my 68. Not sure if there is a difference between the '67 & '68 bracket as shown on eBay. It looks similar, however these are some obvious differences. Could the NOS version be different also? Perhaps I may have answered my own question by posting a small block bracket.

Thanks

The 67 bracket is completely different compared to your pictured bracket.  The pictured bracket is the type that was typically used in 69 on a 390/428 . Many of the 68 Metuchen big blocks that I typically study did not use a support bracket at all as strange as that seems.  Maybe others can attest to wether SJ 390's were any different.

Great thanks Bob. My car did not have one, but I picked this one up and have seen photos of them installed on cars. Just want to make sure that I only install it on my car if it should be there.

One of these (this 67 p/s rear bracket) is not like the other. Namely the one you pictured.

Need to go through my pictures to see if I have a clear shot of one. Did look through some examples and the 68 S and X code Mustangs I've pulled up so far have an index bracket but will look for a better shot of hopefully the full thing

Not an easy spot to get a picture of with the big block and so many had AC also but will give it a shot. BTW hadn't thought about it till you brought this subject up but not sure what hardware your planning on using to attach the PS pump to the block but San Jose is different than Dearborn and NJ cars in that way. Came up long ago with a car we looked over and the eastern judges were unfamiliar with the difference at the time.

I typically see a different style driver side valve cover breather cap used. The chrome cap with the zinc dichromate right angle fitting in a rubber grommet. That is unless Canadian BB engines are different in that respect.

You mean like this? FYI this is not my motor, Canadian cars would not have a smog pump and air cleaner would not have s snorkel. I am not sure about NJ and Dearborn cars. They would not have had smog correct, just SJ cars?

That picture is not a good example. Drivers side smog tubes were not angled like that.

Its better to say some Canadian cars did not recieve smog, because a lot of them did, including the Cobra Jets.

I may be under the wrong impression. I thought the first picture was of your actual engine.

Sorry Bob I should have specified, no the photo was not of my engine. I was using it as a reference for Jeff regarding the power steering bracket as my engine is not assembled to that point yet

Interesting. I thought all Canadian cars were shipped with no smog in 1968, but good to know. Next question is was there only one specific plant that shipped to Canada or could Canadian cars have come from all 3 plants?

I am actually glad to hear that given so much was wrong with that one.

Thanks Bob I should have mentioned that. Not sure when I will actually finish the motor, but much like the rest of the car, when you are sweating every detail, it can make for a much longer process

Thanks Jeff was planning to use this set up for the PS hardware.

The detail I was looking for and is in the example you posted was the use of a threaded (each) stud for the upper mounting bolt and the use of the self locking nut as the example has. Looks good from that stand point

You will also notice that that example what ever year, size or make it is does use an index bracket. Still plan on posting as mentioned earlier - just been a busy day
