68 SJ Trunk Wiring harness retainer tab protector tips
« on: October 26, 2023, 11:58:24 PM »
Just curious about these wiring harness retainer tab protector tips. There were none on my car, but the assembly manual indicates that there should be 11 for the trunk. Were they also used on other wiring tabs in the car or just the trunk?

I have only seen those rubber tabs on 68's in the trunk. I don't know if they were on all but certainly a fair amount given how typical they are seen. I think NPD sells them if not they are relative easy to make.

Yes all 68s should have them. I do not know of any other place they were used.

I did not see them anywhere else in the Assembly Manual

I'm the third owner of the car so I'd like to think it is. The second owner only owned the car for a very short time.  He owned a Ford dealership where I purchased the car.

Are there more photos of your car?

Yes,  I've included many under Member Restorations titled My 1968 NJ Sprint B Pictures.

If there is anything specific I can assist with,  please don't hesitate to ask. I won't claim to have all the info but am trying to get there.

Well I counted my tab protectors and I have nine. I am missing the two under the driver side rear fender. I double check the Electrical Assembly manual page and it does say 11 are required so I am assuming those two tabs should have them.

Bob, can you explain how you would make these please? No sense in buying 11 since I only need 2. Thank you.

Looks like you may be able to use heat shrinkable tubing to make your own.

Yes maybe but it will not look like original. The open on both ends heat shrink tubing will be open on the normally closed end of the factory tab cover. A liquid rubber type product like what you dip tool handles in would make for better results. It is not worth the trouble IMO given the nominal price NPD sells them for.

Agreed Bob. Plastidip would work, but is better suites for parts off the car that you can actually dip the part in as intended. For my money I would just order a set, like I did. Only $11.47 for 11. Hard to beat a buck a piece imo and free shipping to boot!
