68 Dearborn Heater Blower Motor Guard Detail
« on: September 15, 2023, 05:00:31 PM »
On 390 and 428 engines there is a blower motor guard to protect it during decking. In removing the blower guard, I found a tiny (3/8 in.) rubber piece under one of the legs of the guard -pic attached. On my 1968 Dearborn car there was little sound deadener making it easier to spot. The only reason I can surmise is that it was added as an assembly aid to make it easier to install the two Phillips head screws. Once the guard is on, it is not visible. Any other ideas?

Separated this post and put it over in the 68 section as a better fit.

Not sure what a piece of rubber at that outer arm that only attaches to the heater motor post would do over then try and seal that post but don't recall anyone else mentioning finding one in all these years.  Not sure if its been asked before but was your car unrestored when you got it?

That pad is what you find inside the shell nut. It acts like a sealer. Most of the ones that I see new in the box come that way with the sealer .

Jeff asked if my 1968 car was restored. No it was not. I am the original owner except for 6 months when Ford engineering used it to resolve issues common to the 135 series build. Engineering made concessions on the Sign off in order that they be available to race at the Winternationals.

Here is a example of what you are calling a mystery "pad" . It is the inside of a shell nut.

Bob - Mystery is solved - so was the rubber pad serving as a seal? The other 3 shell nuts had no pad for some reason. The amount of information and number of people using this site is amazing. Thank you

Yes it acts as a sealer for the locking nut which is also referred to as a cut nut or pal nut.
