Great thanks Bob that is very helpful information. Hopefully my radio guy can work some magic. Ideally using correct coloured wires etc and even better would be stock harness coming out of the back of the radio with mods inside the chassis
There are 5 wires on the two factory connectors.
*12v switched to key
* Panel light for illumination
* RH Speaker (+)
* LH Speaker (+)
* Speaker common (-)
* ground path provided through mounting points of chassis

You will need for any modern electronics:
* 12v Switched
* 12v Constant
* Panel Light input (illumination)
* 2-wires for each speaker
* Ensured ground path to internal electronics (can be from the radio chassis, connected internally)

2 of the supply wires can be from factory connections (12v switched and illumination). The factory type dash harness that crosses over to each speaker can be modified to a 5-pin or 6-pin bullet style connector. You are not likely to find that with correct color wires. If you harvested one out of old underdash harnesses, you should get about 10-inches on both sides of the connector. Black molded type connector (perhaps square), would look best. Now, you can have that properly grafted in internally of the radio and into a unique harness going out to the speakers.

6-pins:
4 for your two speakers
1 for your 12v Constant supply (memory)
1 for a ground (optional if soldered to the inside of radio chassis)

You have on a 68, a few places to tap into a 12v constant nearby. If concealed properly, nobody will see it. Use proper fuses where the converted radio requires. This should be pretty easy to do all of this but it is time consuming.
