68 Radiator Hose Clamps
« on: June 04, 2023, 09:30:44 AM »
A question about the radiator hose clamp used on a 68 CJ was asked on the 428 CJ forum. Two replies, mine included, stated that the stapled wire type should be used. This is what MCA requires. One reply disagreed and presented original 1968 pictures of 68 CJ?s that appears to have a wide band type clamp, that looked to be a Wittek clamp, not the wire type.

I found in the 60 - 68 MPAC the hose clamp for the 390, 427, 428 to be P/N B7AZ 8287 C this was described as a worm type clamp. Using the 65 - 72 MPAC the hose clamp for the 390, 428 to be P/N C9AZ 8287 B this was described as a slot type clamp. When searching both P/N on the internet both P/N were worm type clamps. Could the service parts be different from the original equipment clamp?

I have a picture of a unrestored 68 302 that had the wire clamps, is it possible that the big blocks used a different clamp?

If the by-pass hose and heater hoses are Wittek, would it not make sense that the radiator hoses could also be Wittek. I may have an original lower hose, if I can find it, I will look for clamp marks. I also have all the same pictures as was presented on the 428 CJ forum and they all show having what appears to be the Wittek clamps. At this point I have no idea what type of clamp should be used.

The stapled clamp can be described as a worm type clamp given that is the way the wire is tightened. The change over to the wire type radiator hose clamps for a BB apparently happened some time in 68.The SB was typically in 66.  I have seen early production 68 390 and 428 engines (not CJ) that used the band type . Maybe there is some early CJ with the band clamp but speaking for myself I have not seen or evidence for a CJ engine with a band type radiator hose clamp.

That is the kind of documentation you will need if there is push back in concours. Thank you for bringing it to my attention.Dates and Magazine publication would add to the weight of its value.

Thanks for the input.

Since the exact date is not known as a MCA judge for 67 / 68 I would think either type clamp maybe acceptable for a 68, but I would expect to find the Wittek only on early 68's, maybe pre-January.

For reference I found my factory installed hoses (68 CJ, build Date 5/1/68) and they both show evidence of the wire type clamp.

Type of clamp used is dependent on what plant the car was built at since the engines were shipped without these hoses attaches so when viewing other cars confirm when and where they were built since it may make a difference

Just as a mention for others reading the change to the wire styled radiator hose clamps appears to depend on what plant in 66 and in 68 at least one plant went back to the pedestal band clamps for at least a period of time during production

I would agree its plant and engine specific.

In 1968, NJ plant motors almost exclusively used the wire clamps on Cobra Jets.

I have seen one exception. This is the 1968 KR press Car #2356

Looks like the clamp wording for the 68 Mustang and Shelby could use some revising.

Keith guess you were asking about Dearborn produced CJ's.

Likely/possibly spring production period or later?

Jeff

Yes and no, the question started on the 428 CJ forum, but here on the CMF turn into a all 68 conversation, not just Dearborn CJ's. From all the information found here and at the 428 CJ site, it appears that the wire clamp was not the only type of clamp used in 68. I will talk to Johnnie Gardener about having the wording changed on the 67/68 judging sheet. The 68 Shelby as the same wording and that may need to be addressed.

Thanks for All you do, I look at this site two or three times a day, the information found here is incredible. Unlike many people on this site, I have only owned a restored one Mustang, my 68 CJ. As a MCA judge learning about all the fine details about all 67 and 68's is impossible without data found here.

Thanks for the very kind comments Keith but the success here is been bringing all the participants together and their efforts.

I'll take some time and look through my picture collection and post what I can find in this thread and do the same for small blocks. I just hope that we can do this without confusion related to plants but if it becomes an issue guess we will split them out as usual.

My Dec built CJ (135 car) from Dearborn uses the tower(band) clamp. Mine were reusable. I added WD40 to help them work and some dish soap water between them and the rubber to help them slide.
1968 CJ - Owner and paint original. Dec 67 build in Dearborn. One of 50 135 Cobra Jets. Ford engineering used it for 8 mos. to resolve problems in the 50 early car build. Ford by-passed the normal sign off to get cars to the Winternationals drag race.
