Battery hold down J hooks/Group 27 Battery
« on: May 10, 2023, 03:12:57 PM »
I have had a point deducted at MCA shows several times for my battery hold down "J" hooks being "too long". I have found my original set and compared them to a set from NPD and a set from Dead Nuts On. They are all the same length.  I  am using a Group 27 battery shell that Dick Berry used in his 67 Shelby that was gutted, so there would be some difference in the height due to the cut, but I would not think it would be more than a saw blades width. Does anyone have an OEM battery height. I have added some "spacers" to raise the battery for the next show but want to make sure I raised it enough.

Your bigger problem is not the J hooks but no 67 Shelby used a group 27 battery. I suspect you are confused on your terminology. All 67 GT500's used a group 24 battery.I judged Dick Berry's 67 Shelby numerous times and he never had a group 27 in it when I judged it. He may have had one in his 69 car he had but not the 67 Shelby that I ever saw.

So to clarify, your asking about a 1970 application.

The J bolt length has come up a number of times with discussion of differences between years and service replacements - as well as reproductions. I know Bob & I have deducted for our share of "too long" J bolts over the years at shows.

Guess you saw the other threads on the subject when you did a search of the past threads. Using the words " battery hold down bolt" I found the following

and to a lesser degree of help the following though there are some possible helpful posts

Sorry Bob, I should have just left that part out of the story.  It is a 27F that has been gutted, that I use in my 70 SCJ.  (I'm sure it came from Dick, so I THOUGHT it was out of his big block car.  Must have been for something else, but as far as I remember, he only had one big block and that was the Shelby).

I will measure the J-Hooks again, but as I said, the ones I have were the same as my originals. I didn't search for J-Hooks as Jeff suggested, but I will look again and measure them.

The 67-70 69 J hooks are 8 and 5/16 inches long . You can typically tell if the longer j hooks are being used because of how far the threaded section sticks up above the hold down nut.  1970 j hooks were longer because Ford went to the thicker plastic hold down. Group 27 were not only in big block Mustangs. ;) Dick Berry at one time had a 69 Shelby that had the optional for 1969/70 GT350 group 27 battery.

In the other post that Jeff linked above, you stated:

67-69 are 8 and 5/16  1970 are 8 5/8 because of fatter plastic hold down in 1970. All of the service ones and AMK's are the 8 5/8 . it is a little bit of a trick to cut them off to the correct length and bevel the edge to look like original. Ed Meyer has made some up with the correct length and correct beveled end and sells them on ebay.

Above you state 67-70 are 8 and 5/16.  Are they the same for a 70?  or not?

I corrected my typo. 67-69 are 8  5/16 . 70 are longer. AMK was making the 67-69 length. That is where I got mine when I bought them. Ed Meyer talked AMK into making them. AMK Max was part of our group. I haven't bought any recently to confirm length . I do know that the default length is the longer 70 style because that was the last style available from Ford and what was copied by the aftermarket. This is a common practice when the after market copies a part to be reproduced.

Looks like 8 and 5/8's is what I have. So I shouldn't be getting points deducted IMHO.  I showed them to Bob Perkins, he thought they were fine.

8 5/8 is the 1970 longer length so they will be fine on a 1970 car.The 8 5/16 is the 67-69 style.

So back to my original question....  Battery size.... I'm pretty sure that's what it is.

Group 22,24 and 27 batteries are all the same height which approximately 8 1/16  high .

Just be careful if your going to try and "I have added some "spacers" to raise the battery for the next show". Too much height and a battery shield will not fit correctly if you application requires one  ;)
