Apologies for that omission - I thought I did include that info but obviously I didn't (until my second post.)

Thank you for the reply.  A few follow up questions:

With my factory set up (302 J code 4 speed MT, factory AC + TE but no PS), can someone explain WHY Ford would want two identical belts running the same path from the alternator to the water pump and then the crankshaft?  Does my setup require different more amperage and somehow two belts works better than one for this task?  Which leads me to...

Do I have to have a specific type of alternator such that it can handle two sheaves?  Looking at p. B-10 in Mannel, would the alternator pulley be C5AZ-10344-J?  Or perhaps even C7TZ-10344-B, which it says is for an optional 65 amp "heavy duty Ford alternator in 1968/69" (per Note 15 on p. B-11 of Mannel)?  Or can I simply use my existing alternator and add a two sheave pulley?
Yes you can use your existing alternator and add the different pulley.  It is extremely unlikely your car used the 65 amp alternator. My guess is ether the 42 (orange ink stamp)or 55 amp (red ink stamp) alternator.  The number of pulley sheaves does not typically relate to amperage . The number of sheaves are typically related to accessories.

Bob, thanks so much for your reply.  I always appreciate when people much more knowledgeable than me can draw upon their experience to answer these types of questions.

May I ask why you believe mine was unlikely to be the 65 amp alternator?  After my prior post, I spent quite a bit of time reviewing the generator pulley table and notes on pages B-10-11 in Mannel.  If I'm reading it correctly, the only dual sheave pulleys for 1968 were C5AZ-10344-J and C7TZ-10344-B.  But when I read the notes for C5AZ-10344-J, it says that it was used with "a 1965-68 55 amp Ford alternator, except when AC is combined with either PS or TE."

My factory setup was AC + TE (but not PS), so that would exclude C5AZ-10344-J.  That leaves only C7TZ-10344-B, which used the 65 amp model alternator.  Am I not thinking about this correctly?  I'm assuming Mannel is the bible when it comes to compatibility and what was used - is that a faulty assumption on my part?  Thanks for any additional insights you can provide.

The 65 amp is so rare on a Mustang that I have never come across one on any of the hundreds of cars that I have inspected over the years. I am not sure what option was needed to be ordered to trigger the 65 amp alternator use. The 55 amp alternator is the typical one used on a factory A/C application. The C5AZ-J is the duel sheave one i see most common.

Bob, thanks so much for your reply.  Obviously, your experience with hundreds of cars carries a lot of weight.  If I hadn't read the Mannel pages over and over again, I would have simply deferred to what your practical experience has shown you (and to be clear. I may very well follow your advice bc I haven't found a 65 amp alternator for sale anywhere so far, which says something.)

I agree completely that C5AZ-J would be the one to use if I had AC only.  BUT note 11 pretty clearly says C5AZ-J was not used when AC was combined with either PS or TE.  It does NOT specify what should be used in its place, but reading the rest of notes and the table on page B-10 doesn't leave any alternative other than C7TZ-B (unless Mannel is incomplete or inaccurate.)  Not sure how to read that any other way.  I am going to through the unrestored threads and see if I can find a 68 J code with AC and TE only.

I think that you are wasting your time pursuing the 65 amp alternator angle based on passed experience. I can't recall seeing a 65 amp alternator for sale ether in many decades of searching for 65-70 Mustang parts . I can't explain what you say you read in the Mannel book unless a typo or taken out of context.

That's because there isn't one.
Jim

I did say if available.

So we use the  May 27, 67 engine assy manual since by that time we were close to the 68 model year.
You use what's available to get close.

If available, get the 68 version. It appears few people get this manual.
