1964 1/2 8" 5 lug Axle PAINT DAUBS
« on: April 18, 2011, 04:37:07 PM »
Hello

I have a low mile April build car with 28spline axles that are clearly painted (for identification)

Can anyone confirm the use of ORANGE daubs on the center and tips of studs for Id??

What plant - if it matters

Know one guy that likes to put red on the end of his wheel studs  but never seen in person or had anyone provide pictures.

As for the center - have seen a few marks/colors there but not orange

It would seem that the color of paint on the end of the stud indicated the length of the stud while the slash mark painted on the end of the axle indicated the number of splines on the differential end of the axle.  This info was taken from the December 1992 issue of Mustang Monthly and the title is "Detailing a Mustang Rear End"

I guess you could call it red (more red/orange).   There is only a bit left in the axle center and on the stud ends.

Looks like it has been painted at least a couple of times.Red than Black. The axle, studs and drum would have been natural + any paint marks.

What color is the car?  I'm guessing maybe done by a previous owner.

No - the slight colored area you are seeing is rust where a lug wrench scrapped the black off (years ago) and now is rusting.   Wheels aren't original to car (now) I had the 64.5 wheels sandblasted (but they weren't painted either)

Pace car White (no other signs of paint or overspray on the drums)

Rear end tag is WCZ-F  3.00 4DB 901 - if that helps
