Rear end and differential seat paint - Dearborn 6 Cylinder
« on: March 08, 2023, 04:24:48 PM »
Hello everyone, today a new question....
I am rebuilding the rear axle of my 70 Dearborn 250 1V, I have seen in many photos that the color of the rear axle, (mine is an 8 inch with LSD), is semi gloss black, but the diff housing color is oxide red or black??
I don't remember where, but I thought I read that red oxide was only for 8 cylinders.
What is the original color?

Since you have an 8" rearend in 70 it would have the same finishes as an 8" for any other engine that year so same finishes. Semi-gloss black for backing plates and housing (with the bare surfaces masked off - ends and where the third member attaches) and a third member, diff housing and pinion retainer painted a red oxide primer sealer (not flat red oxide) prior to machining.
