1970 Lower Steering Column Trim Panel Mounting
« on: February 11, 2023, 01:54:01 PM »
I've never quite understood how to properly mount the plastic trim panel shown in the attached picture. There are two screws that secure it at the lower edges, but what, if anything, keeps it in place where the upper end meets the steering column (and I have a big gap)? What's the function of the small spring clip (you can see one just to the right of the headlamp switch) on each side?

Insert the top front edge under the corresponding bottom edge of the trim above it then rotate the back up and screw it in.  A tricky attachment feature!

As mentioned above those clips were designed to "grab" and align the upper edge to the gauge bezel.

There are a few things to check that if off can create gaps or issues

Is there the correct number of spacer/aluminum blocks between the brake and clutch bracket and the steering column clamp?

Do you have the correct lower steering column trim panel for your application? There are two depending on body type. Coupe and convertible is one while the sportroof/fastback uses a different one if I recall correctly (at least I recall in 69 they were  ::). Don't have an illustration handy at the moment

That did the trick - thanks!

The Two metal clips straddle the top side edges of the lower trim piece on both sides.  Per the attachment, they are positioned close to the back edge.  The springs clips hang out over the back edge so they are in interference with the dash.  The springs push / align the trim forward under the upper front edge.  I hope this is understandable.

Ok Fellows, I finally installed the cover under dash, Now I get it, you tuck that upper left side in ,those little metal clips just help center it, Screws secure the whole thing, Thanks Boss Brothers. Greg
