554 J Decal
« on: April 03, 2011, 04:39:05 PM »
I have a 554 J decal for the front of my engine. I read it should go on the flat area near the waterpump.
Does this mean on the actual block on the front face of # 1 cylinder ?.
I have a raised rectangle plinth there that would mean placing the decal dificult. If this is the location are there alternatives ?
Thanks.

Did your car originally have a cast iron or aluminum water pump?

Didn't change level 7 make the change to a cast iron water pump?  I'm at the office and don't have Bob Mannel's book close by, so I'm going from memory.

Cast iron pump introduced at level 8, June 1965.

So on an aluminum pump, would this have been the location of the decal?

Matches some original examples, yes.  But, obviously applied after the engine was painted.

Where did you get the decal?

I'm not a judge, nor do I play one on TV, but I have seen this decal behind the alternator on the block.

NPD carries them.  The decal number should match what is on your metal engine tag.  Provided it is the original tag

That is where it would be on a 67 Mustang big block.  Late 65(cast iron waterpump) and 66-67 small block had it stuck across the coil long ways. Bob

NPD carries two varieties. Request the ECS brand. They are the most faithful to the originals. Bob
