GT FE 390 Harmonic Balancer Pulleys
« on: November 18, 2022, 11:45:37 PM »
Hi, I have an issue which I am having trouble sorting out.  I have a GTA FE 390 with a single groove harmonic balancer (HB) (C4AE-6316-B). I have added power steering to the vehicle so I have purchased a 3 Groove pulley (C5AE-D) which bolts on to the HB.  This pulley actually has the ignition timing marks on the pully.  The pulley is larger in circumference than the HB and fits over the groove single groove in the HB.

My issue is that given the 3 groove bolt on pulley is larger in diameter, when I put the fan belt on the belt is almost touch the water pump outlet and hose.  It just misses but given that there may be some flex it may rub against the water pump and hose.
The other issue is that fitting the power steering belt causes the fan belt to rub significantly on the lower radiator hose.  I do have an after market large radiator so it maybe the configuration of the new radiator that is different to the original radiator and the hose may be fitted differently on the original.

After all that my question is can anyone tell me if there is a single groove bolt on pulley to my current HB.  Can you tell me what the Fomoco number should be.  There are so many out there it is so confusing.  I bought a single groove pulley the other day but the 3 bolt pattern is different. ($85 down the drain)

Cheers

The radiator is most likely not the problem because of hose placement. The 67 narrow radiator and the wider 68-70 larger radiator have the hose inlet and outlets in the same orientation. After market radiators designed for BB Mustang follow suite.  Consequently the 67-70 radiator hoses all fit same.

Great, thanks re the radiator information.  Just now trying to determine the pulley situation and whether there is a single groove bolt on pulley.

Hello Tiny:

Had the same issue with my GT 390 4/Sp Car.  No A/C or Emissions, car has P/S

Harmonic Balancer C4AE-6316-A  Single Grove. ( drives the Alternator)
Crank Pulley for P/S  C4ME-6A301-A. Single Groove
W/P Pully is C6)E-8509-C  Single Groove ( which I don't have )  Two Groove installed (correct single groove has been difficult to find)
P/S Pulley AF / Replacement 7AA
I too have a larger radiator which hasn't been a problem.
Picture attached
Good Luck

What year? The information is often year specific. Also no picture. The attachment took me to an e-mail.

1967  Try this one.  1968 Pulleys are different.   I had a 68 aftermarket balancer and a two grove bolt on pulley.   You may be having alignment issues as possible mis-matched balancer and pully combination as I did.

The 7AA pulley you included in your past list pulley is typically used on AC applications because of the offset or lack of. A non AC power steering pulley typically has a positive offset unlike the 7AA you listed. 6AA is a common non AC PS pulley for example that comes to mind. Without knowing the other pulley's you were using my first thought is that the 7AA will cause alignment problems on a non AC application where the crank and WP pulley are correct for the non AC application. At least as it relates to the factory setup.

Hello Bob,

Looking at a Ford Manual 7AA shows as the replacement for AF (AF is on the motor now). so not sure about 6AA.  Pulleys all line up and work well as I have been driving the car all Summer.  If you have a line on a water pump pulley ( C6OE-8509-C) would complete the pulley operation.

According to the MPC the C1AE-6A301-B cast iron single grove pulley is the typical factory non AC with PS crank pulley you need for your application.

That is correct that the 7AA and the AF 5 3/4 diameter pulleys replace each other. That does not address the issue of their intended application. In this case as it applies to Mustang is that they are typically for A/C applications. This is not to say that you can't get them to work and line up with the right combination of crank pulleys but my point is that it is not Factory Mustang in this instance. Given the mission statement of this forum I was pointing out that it is different then  factory non A/C Mustang applications. The pulley marked "AC" 4 7/8 diameter is what typically is factory on a 67 390 Mustang non A/C. Of course that is in combination with the other correct application pulleys.

The C5AE-D is a crank pulley for a A/C application car. That is one problem if wanting factory pulleys on a non A/C Mustang application. As mentioned the C1-B crank pulley is what typically was used on a 67 390 Mustang non A/C  power steering car application.

page 68 of the 1967 engine equipment assembly manual  shows what looks like a stamped steel crankshaft pulley, C4ME-6A301-A
a single groove add on pulley, same diameter as damper pulley, takes a 1/2" belt

+1 on the "AC" p/s pulley, it takes a 1/2" belt

the "AF" and the "AC" p/s pulleys are the same offset,  but the "AF" pulley uses a 15/32" belt  and is a larger diameter
which matches up when using the larger diameter crank pulleys (like C5AE-E)
