1970 Mustang Trunk Tire Placement
« on: October 05, 2022, 10:54:23 PM »
After reviewing the 1970 Mustang Body Assembly Manual(Jim Osborn) page 78

My question is the regular production steel wheel is shown as nipple down so the backside of the tire is in the up position and the white lettering is down on the trunk floor.  Is that really the correct position that is accepted as assembly line correctness.

Please see attachment to review page 78

TY

If you notice that page of the assembly manual was dated before 70 production started and was likely replaced later but it was the page Jim choose when he put together these manuals from a collection of others in pretty poor shape in general. Not sure when your car was built, didn't share that, but that may help since there were a couple of different jack instructions used originally during 70 production and they are different as far as illustrations and other details

My completed build date is 10 Sep 69, New Jersey car
Original paint car, 70 Mach 1 Cobra Jet 4 speed

Where is the continuation references at to figure out which position the tire left the factory was it in the nipple down position.

Thank you for the help

For showing often the judge or even the casual viewer will refer to the jack instructions. Another option is original, unrestored cars but of course it only takes one time of use by the owner to get things placed back in the car in a different of "better" order

Looking at jack instructions for non-styled wheels or space savers they all show the wheel in the "upside down" position - so nipple side down. Did not find a single unrestored example were the original spare had not been removed so don't have that to offer.

Guess I need to put together a thread on the different versions of the jack instruction stickers used during 70 production now that I spent the time collecting examples

Additional info:  Jack handle on top of hold down (J) hook holding the spare in place. Jack partly expanded below spare between the spare and the trunk floor (mat, board and underlayment)

These are from my 10/13/69 Dearborn built Eliminator.  I do not believe that the spare had ever been removed until I took it out.  The valve stem was down and the jack partially deployed.

Top illustration shows a styled steel wheel storage configuration. Standard wheel / jack storage is different as Dave shows in his Eliminator. I've never seen a jack instruction decal that matches that one.

Don't think either of the illustrations reflect the styled steel wheel used in 70 if you compare them. The one on the left even has spokes  ::)  "We" just had the same question come up at a show yesterday (70 sportroof with standard wheels and dog dish hubcaps) I was judging at. Discussion also included the jacking instructions as we have here
