Interesting 70 Metuchen Buck Tag
« on: August 27, 2022, 01:19:42 PM »
I saw a rough looking 1970 mach1 posted on the internet for sale and noticed the buck tag was odd. The vin number stamped in the tag only lists a #1 before the engine code-H. Being that this car came from Metuchen it is common to see the the vin number on the buck tag with the 3rd and 4th digits being omitted. I know there have been discussions about Metuchen stamping the hidden vin number with a 1T,2T,3T or 4T and I have owned a fair number myself but don?t recall seeing a buck tag that was stamped like this.

Don't recall seeing that either but it was NJ ::)

Looked through what I have handy and I don't have any other examples from the same production period to compare or to find another example, done the same, by the possible same operator that day

Interesting find

Are we sure the tag shown above is from a 1970 model? I thought that 'TT' (Tu tone hood) was a code used for 1969 Machs.

We need to remember that the codes used on buck tags can and are different depending on assembly plant and year.

I don't have a buck tag that looks (VIN) like the in the original post but do have maybe a dozen or so 70 NJ buck tags with TT on Mach I's

I did find, as expected, the TT being used on 69 NJ buck tags also. TT was not used on 69 or 70 San Jose buck tags. Didn't find that code on 69 or 70 Dearborn but didn't look through all the collection - including the Buck Tag Project of the 90's we did

I checked the In Search of Mustangs database and based on registered Mustangs for both T and F plants the OP Mustang is a 1970 Metuchen built vehicle. Below is the search result for the same scheduled build date.

VIN   Plant   Series   Engine   Unit   Body   Color   Trim   Date   DSO   Axle   Trans   Other

0T05M159039   T   05   M   159039   63C   G   3G   24C   15   6   X

These tags are mentioned in detail in Marti's Tag Book, including a case where a genuine Boss 302 received a state issued VIN because the inspector thought that the 4 meant it was a 1974 model.

Should have mentioned Kevin's mention but there are so many examples posted in threads around the internet didn't want to mention all the different sources
