Engine VIN Stamping

Hi folks. Could someone please help me decipher the stamping number (VIN??) on my engine block from my 1968 Mustang Convertible? It does not match the car's VIN. The stamping on the engine block on the top lip behind the intake manifold reads: 8B504247. Also stamped just off to the side of that number is 2011-1.

Looks to me that a previous owner has swapped the original engine for a re-man engine. What would the 8B504247 be from?

B would be the assembly plant, which in this case is Oakville.  I have no idea which model the engine was for.

Google oakville ford assembly plAnt 1968 and it might show you what car line was being built that year. Definately not mustang.

i got a question concerning the topic:
i know that in 64.5-66 only K-Codes were stamped with the VIN, but how is it in 67, 68 and later?
I once read that in 1968 a law forced the car manufacturer to stamp the drivetrain with the VIN - is it right? and was it really practiced on EVERY block produced in 68 and later?

67 hipos were VIN stamped too. You read correctly about the 68 law. It would be foolish to think that out of the many hundreds of thousands of engines that Ford built in 68,69,70 alone that they never missed a engine to get stamped IMHO? . Not to mention the later years. Anomalies happen. Stamping would be more the rule then the exception however IMHO. Just my opinion. Bob

Believe a better statement would be that every block and transmission was suppose to be stamped. ;)

Jeff, what you said is exactly what i meant  :)
I'm aware of the anomalies during Mustang or even Ford production, so I shouldn't have underlined the "EVERY" with big letters ;)
