What determines if I need both heater hoses with white stripes or 1 yellow and 1 white?

Never found any proof that it was nothing more than what was simply being used at the time in production.  As far as I know, the yellow stripe hose is not being reproduced.

We keep the sets with the yellow and white stripes in stock.  The reason we keep them is that I have a March '65 SJ FB that had the original heater hose.  It had one yellow and one white stripe.  That said, I don't believe we will ever be able to nail down when, why and where this combination was used.

Do the stripes wipe off easily or are they very durable?

They are fairly durable (probably as much so as the originals.)  That said, if you handle or wipe them pretty hard with antifreeze on your hand or a rag, the marking probably will come off.

I don't think that there was any rhyme or reason to the one white, one yellow stripe thing, but what I have found is that the cars with yellow stripes always had A/C.  So the Yellow stripes were mostly on A/C cars.  That is what I have alwyas found.  No definitive answer of course..

I haven't seen too many yellow in relation to red or white but the few I have found still on cars were non air cars. Like your comment I suspect it was more random .Bob

I haven't seen any red on a 65 but have seen red on a couple of different late production 66's (both were one white and one red hose). Of course 67 68,and 69 had red but also seen white and yellow in 67 too. I think the transition crossed production year lines like many other things. just a few observations for the discussion.Bob

If your referring to the "odd ball" possibilities then yes they were likely a specific time and plant thing. Problem is that today its very difficult to determine if a set of hoses are original or replacements. DOn't know if anyone has figured out how to figure out the coding for dating these things

I remember a reference some time ago that mentioned the number of lines in the ribs identified the manufacturer of the hose.  I do have a sample of an original yellow stripe hose section I removed from a '66 Metuchen car, would have to check it out to see if the codes match up with the NOS white stripe hose I have.
