1969 Special order 0078 Chicago area
« on: July 02, 2022, 10:18:33 PM »
Saw this car for sale on one of the Facebook groups. Anyone ever hear of a special order 0078 from the Chicago area. I assume this would have been a local promotion. The color on this car was a bright blue.

The form also says "special paint" "color unknown". This may have been a local promotional gimmick.

Since its a spring time car it might just be a local or regional promotion or part of the Color of the Rainbow or Color of the Month larger promotions that were popular with dealers in 68 and 69.

Need to find another car with the same DSO to prove or support that possibility

Was the car originally ordered from the Chicago area?  Just guessing based on the special order number

Interesting that that this particular DSO had so few special orders for all Ford products in that area by the time this order was placed. For comparison at San Jose that year a random example built mid Jan had an order number of #72 2431 (no gap just inserted to separate the numbers for comparison) And another example is a 6 cylinder sportroof built in Nov 68 that documents that Ford already had 7473 Special orders by the time that car was build for a dealer in the #73 DSO. Must have been ALLOT of special orders in the Salt Lake City area that year. Of course this would have included all the non-special paint cars, trucks and other models also

An interesting possibility is that this low number might indicate that the promotion was planned or arranged in the regional district well before April in preparation for a sale since after the first of the year sales typically dropped off so that is when you see things like the annual Ford White Sale and other promotions of the era.

And as we've discussed Ford didn't keep records of special order paint colors used in these orders in the data base so its left to the current owners to determine or find another car from the same order, if not an single car order, to help

Jeff the low number of 0078 produced on April 22 is what I was wondering about. Your thoughts on a pre determined promotion special for spring makes a good theory. I also have a 1969 convertible that was special ordered for dso 15 Newark ordering district and was built on January 17th and was giving an order number of 7065.

Think that's just how Marti does Special Paint cars.
It's also how Ford listed the paint on the window stickers for special painted cars - blank, as in the actual color was on the sales order, in this case - sales order 410078.

Jim

In 69 the line was not blank but showed that it was a Special Order Paint. For Shelby's that year they included a general idea of what the color was but often no "name" for the color was typed in

Formating of window stickers was not standardized in a number of ways

Additional cost of $94.60 is listed near the bottom of the list

69 Shelby In this case it was a no cost choice

I wonder why the above form shows the base engine as a 289 in '69? They hadn't been the base engine for nearly 2 years.

What I intended to say was the door data tag was blank. The paint color in that case was (or should have been) documented in the sales order.

Order Type is "RETAIL", per Kevin Marti; Retail ? an individual comes to a dealership and orders an as yet unbuilt vehicle.

Kevin also mentions "Under Paint or Tire" on the DSO line.
Wonder if there are 'other' "Under .. _____" item specific things, that Kevin has identified.

This could just be one guy, that wanted a different color painted, on his very low optioned Mustang Sport Roof.

Yes likely it was common place in those days to order a car to be built for you and not purchase one off the lot. At least my family and people we knew did it all the time. Was kind of exciting to wait and go down to meet the cars when they came in. I last did this for the family car in the 90's. Wanted a wagon for the family with all the performance options and without all the power windows and the like.

Yes that line confused me since we know that it was used for more than just paint and tire choices. Had the first special order car from 71 DSO in 65 production. never figured out what the non- regular production item or items that were ordered on the car. Was a regular blue six cylinder automatic car. Figured the dealer ordered something special on it in order to move in front of other dealers to get one of the very first fastbacks San Jose built

Yes believe this is what the OP found. Had a 70 convertible that was that way. Purchased it from the original owner in Berkley, It was the third Mustang convertible she had purchased from the same dealership so they had a buyer they knew they needed to take car of her. Se disliked all of the factory colors so she choose another and she also didn't like the "fake" wire hubcaps so they took care of both issues and both were called out on the window sticker.  Always wished I had kept that car - it was the wife's club/show car at the time but had to sell it to buy her next car that would replace it.

Like a 69 Special order Mach I I had the chrome remote control mirror replaced the painted racing mirrors. Shown below

Also below shows the DSO for the order. 728217

We've gotten off the original focus of the thread so the other discussion on the meanings and applications of the 6 digit codes has been separated from this one so that it might continue.

That discussion can be followed at
