Topic: 69 SJ SCJ 4speed close ratio V code 3.91 gears

I was told I needed a gear reducer for the speedometer cable by one expert and another said no, not for the 69 scj 3.91 4 speed car. Please help me get the correct info. as they are hard to find and certainly not cheap. Thank you in advance for any leads.

What is the build date of the car?  Makes a difference in the answer.

It was built 3-20-1969.      V-Code , thank you for the documentation. Looks like my build date exempts me from needing the reducer. Thank you all for the input.

I agree - no reducer.  But your transmission speedo drive gear will need to be the correct one for this time frame (not the same as the drive gear used with the reducer).

Thank you and I will make sure it is correct. Knowing the restoration was done using mostly oem parts I believe it is correct.

Yes, that's what our research seems to indicate.

Correct it depended on when the car was assembled for the speedo adapters

It does appear that all automatic trany's did use the gear reducer regardless of assembly date. Interesting.

I have never had a C6 apart but isn't the speedo input gear made on the shaft and not removable?  If so, then that gear ratio is fixed (unlike the 4-speed) and a reducer would be required with all 3.91 and 4.30 geared cars.
