Speedometer Cable Question
« on: May 01, 2022, 07:55:26 PM »
Is there some sort of an electrical connection on the speedometer cable? My original speedometer cable is a two-piece cable with some sort of connector tying the two ends together under the dash. The longest side of the cable goes from under the dash to the transmission. The short piece goes from the speedometer to a connection under the dash. The two ends connect to some sort of electrical "thingie"?  I ordered a new speedometer cable and it came as a one piece cable.  Any idea's about what this "thingie" is, or what it's for? Can I by-pass it? Please see photos. Thanks, Denny

This is an emissions device introduced on some 1970 engine/transmission combinations to control the spark advance under certain conditions. You can bypass the system very easily but that obviously wouldn't be concours.

Is there a vendor for the original speedometer cables? I'd go that route rather than by-pass the unit? Thanks so much for your help. Denny

Carl, I haven't disconnected them yet to see where the actual malfunction is. Crawling under the car I see a "rub or burn" spot on the cable, that's why I chose to replace it. Until I have a chance to pull the gear end out of the transmission and give it a spin, I won't know what's really wrong. Right now, the speedo doesn't register anything. Stay tuned. Denny

I probably have some somewhere from an M code auto. But of course they might be bad being 52 years old.
