Convertible Top Replacement Choice
« on: April 27, 2022, 11:41:10 PM »
I'm going to need to replace the convertible top on my '69. I had a conversation with the installer who tells me that the quality of the convertible tops available is poor compared to how they used to be. He thinks that Robbins Auto Top has declined in quality. I wanted to ask for opinions on this topic. Do people agree? Any ideas where to get a good quality replacement? Also, did the cars originally have a plastic window when new? Is it better to get one with the split glass?

I finally made the decision and bought an Ez-On top so I understand your pain. My choice came down to two points. The first is the fabric which is the Haartz Pinpoint. They all seem to use the same fabric if you want it to look close to the original so there is no real advantage there. The other is the differences with the folding rear window. I read several reviews praising Kee tops with the only complaint being their rear window hinge seems to be very stiff. The Ez-On window hinge is supposed to be more pliable.

West Coast Classic Cougar put out an in depth video a couple of years ago showing a top install on a 71-73 Cougar. The top they used was an Ez-On.

I got my top from NPD.

The plastic ones will eventually scratch and crack with enough age and handling.

The potential issue with the glass is the seam delamnating from the glass.  They are better now...at least the two I have.  But I don't put them up or down much.

Yours could have come either way.  Info is on the Marti report.

Thanks for the feedback. I see good things online about KEE and EZ-ON and also a company called Electron. Does anyone has experience with Electron?

Robbins and Ez on are 1 company. They sell 2 or more products. I'm not sure of the difference. I put one on my 85 (cloth) Ez on and the other on my 89. The 89 Robbins white top seems to have mold stains from the inside. Being in CA, extended moisture is not a big problem but I'm sure some door seals leaked.
