Dash gauge lens retainer ?tach?
« on: April 26, 2022, 03:12:56 PM »
Why would the small retainer also have ?tach? printed on it?

Not having a number of pictures of the back side of 68 gauge bezels and gauges I could only guess one possibility would be that the ring is installed with that edge of the retainer towards the tach so that orientation would be quick and easy for the assembler or that the particular retainer was only used with tach dashes and different from non-tach gauge assemblies

Thanks for the info. I don?t have a non-tach unit to compare it with. It may make more since when I start to reassemble it. I am getting ready to send the gauges off to Tachman to restore and test so it will be a while till I get to that point of the restoration. I did manage to keep the lettering when I repainted the retainers.

I myself have not done any business with Tachman but a number of people have posted in various threads here and on the SAAC forum their dissatisfaction with him. You may want to do some more asking for testimonials. Sometimes where there is smoke there is fire. Regardless of what you decide I hope that you only have good luck.

The mask (retainer) for the ammeter and oil pressure gauges was different for tach and non-tach applications.

Thanks Scott for confirming that. Thought that was a possibility

After assembly, it looks like they may have labeled that particular side of the retainer TACH to help the factory worker know which side the tach went on when assembling. This is a San Jose car.

I believe this is the correct answer. To elaborate, illumination aspects may be the main difference.
