PS pump fasteners
« on: March 15, 2011, 07:18:41 PM »
I have 4 bolts with integral washer heads used to mount the bracket to the pump (3) and one to mount bracket to motor. What is the correct finish for these ? Also the big cast aluminum bracket stays natural but the special steel bracket which mounts to the pump center nipples what finish?

Phosphate/oil on the bolts. Pretty sure the bracket is natural stamped steel

I cleaned those 3 bolts with the dremel tool & wire wheel attachment. They turned out very nice and looked like dark gun bluing. I liked the finish more than replating.

Thanks for the responses. Phosphating not an issue as I got the home kit to do some of the vert top fasteners. If that's the finish I will get a collection of fasteners to do all at one time. I figured the rear bracket was natural. Almost looks aluminum after blasting.

Hi, I have an NOS PS upper kit for a 1969 FE mustang that was shipped in August 69, but contained mostly 68 parts (TRW pump dated 8/30/68, C8zz upper pressure hose, ect) and I saw your posts about detailing the pump, ect. The pump in the kit looks like it had plastic caps placed on the outlet and return, the pulley surface  of the shaft masked, the dipstick installed, and the whole pump sprayed a gloss black.(including the inner nut that retains the tag) Under the tag is bare steel. The bolts that hold the pump to the bracket, the bracket that stablizes the high pressure hose and the nut that holds it on are both phosphate. I have the TRW pump off my late 68 S code FB and it's finished in the same way.     Hope this helps...    John

John thank you very much for the information. i wouldn't have thought that the stabilizing bracket would have been phosphated but maybe thats why it wasn't pitted from rust. There was probably always a good coating of leaking engine oil, PS fluid and road grime protecting its finish.
