1970 Mach 1 exterior paint
« on: March 15, 2022, 03:40:19 AM »
Greetings to all. I am considering repainting several panels on a Chestnut bronze metalic 3347-A on Marti and Y col on the door tag. Is it possible to reproduce this color today. Are these codes what I need to get it started or does a paint shop just have to mix and match with guess work? Thanks in advance for any leads.

Depends on who you use to supply/make the paint. In general this step is not much fun. But the general answer for trying to match the original or other paint you will need somewhere to start then have the company match a sample from your car. Maybe an end cap that you can take off and provide rather than traveling with the whole car. Some can come out and use a "camera" made for copying colors and converting them to a formula but even then you going to normally need a few test spray outs to see if the computer got it close or better. Unfortunately metallic will be more difficult to match especially since the size of and type of metallic has changed over the years.

Compare the shot outs in the sun from various angles since they can match from different angles but stand out in from another angle

Thanks Jeff. I know it is not an easy task but I think it will be interesting to try. We are going to use the codes and start there. If all else fails I will probably just leave it the way it is which is decent driver quality. It will never make it to be a concourse car on my watch.

In 1996 I bought a 1970 Mach ! with a Chestnut Metallic Exterior ( Y- Ford 3347-A ) and Ginger Interior  as a restoration project.  I completed  the restoration and eventually sold the car. It is now in Australia. If I remember correctly Auto Paint Depot in San Diego, CA had the exact match of the original Chesnut Metallic paint. Chestnut Metallic was a Thunderbird color and was offered on Mustangs as a special 1970 Spring
promotion. I have forgotten how many Mach 1 Mustangs were built with the color. But, it is rare. There were only 14 1970 Boss 302s in the color. I believe Auto Paint Depot supplied a PPG mix. I will search for a color code and see if there is still a website.

The 1970 Ford PPG Industries paint chips shows code Y as 2142 and Medium Bronze Poly. Looks like Chestnut Metallic to me.

Thank you for this input. I can use every possible lead in my quest to match up the paint. I want to avoid a complete repaint if possible.  I will pass it on to my paint guy.
