Oil Pan Drain Plug Info
« on: March 12, 2022, 05:07:41 PM »
Hello, I clearly have an incorrect drain plug and gasket. Does anyone have pictures of the correct one for my 68 Sprint B with a 289 and where can I get the proper concours plug? In the Mustang 19641/2 - 1973 Restoration book the part numbers listed are 6734 for the gasket and 6730 for the drain plug. There are multiple choices on NPD website. Some with markings on the bolt others with none. Then there is a red gaskket, black gasket, and white one as choices. Which is correct?

Here's a picture of the one I have installed on my car right now.

The ones that I have seen most frequently on 68 69 are plain with no markings . I have a oil 68 69 302 pan on the shelf and that is what it has. I looked through my box of oil pan bolts and the gaskets seem to be a nylon plastic semi opaque and is yellowy white now. The yellow comes with age I am pretty certain. That is how I remember them also . They were painted on the engine so what ever you use will end up being blue in the end.

Will look to see if I have a close up of a 68. Not allot of chance that someone would take a picture of an original.

Not certain of the gasket but the white/opaque nylon gasket were included with the aftermarket engine gasket kits of the period, installed a number of them,  so they may have still been metal for assembly line. Will see if I can find some documentation

From the Text-Engine.pdf of parts that is located in the library section, the Oil Pan Drain Plug for 65/68 is D1AZ 6730-A and the gasket is C2OZ 6734-A. From some pictures I found online it appears there are no markings on the top of this plug and the gasket is white nylon. I've attached the pertinent page from the listing that includes the plug and gasket.

That number is a service part issued three years after the car was built. It "may" or "may not" be the same.

Ah hah. Is there a part listing of the original part numbers that were used during the build of the cars?

Yes and no. The Mustang Assembly Manuals listed the part numbers of sub-assemblies to be used to build a car, but individual component parts of those sub-assemblies are not normally found. As an example, an engine was delivered to the assembly line almost completely assembled. The "engineering" part number for the crank, rods, cam, etc, are not readily available.

My drain plug which I believe to be original-a 68 low mile car with FE engine has a drain plug with the F - C as shown above in Phil's response.

Have you verified the threads in the pan are ok? That is one weird looking "plug".
Almost looks like a lug nut!

Yes it is.  What are the dimensions of the plug? Is it 1/2" 20 threads?

From the 60-68 MPC...

Interesting that Ford stocked that replacement plug for those specific "Specials" With Three 2, two four barrels as single four barrels

Interesting description and why would those be different than other engines.

What year MPC was that scan from?
