Interior Trim Screw caps on my 64.5
« on: March 12, 2022, 02:38:29 PM »
After in depth thread searches I only find 2 screw cap positions on the 64.5-65 cars:
-the likely 'assembly line' caps on the 3 voltage regulator screw ends in the grille cavity-approx generator post sized
-fastback interior trim scew caps for the trunk area - qty 5  used

My Dearborn July 2 scheduled build convertible had seven of the latter, smaller, trim screw type.
Light grey painted, metal (brass?) , with rubber inserts.

My pre-deconstruction photos missed where these were installed. I expect these came also from the trunk or perhaps under dash.

Any thoughts on these incorrect' caps?

Original owner was a Parts Manager at a Ford dealer, I am wondering if he poked himself a couple times doing some service, and grabbed some fastback caps.

Pictures would help. And I direct you attention to this Forums Library to topic "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet 64-66". There are two files, one by part number, one by application - aka where used.
It's a lot easier to comment on a hardware item when you have a part number.

I think this is the part, extracted from the spreadsheet, but this is not plastic

Only voltage regulator screw covers I've seen is the domed no shoulder black hard rubber style

Only fastback screw covers on the trunk side were opaque plastic for 65 and light grey for 66  version shown in threads on the site

What your pictures show are call "Capped Nuts" by Ford. That style, with the metal on the outside, is not used on 64 thru 66 Mustangs. That style is used in 67 and on.

Where on a 67s? I have only seen grey or black plastic on 67-68s.

Marty, the only 1967 use that I recall for the metal capped nuts is in the trunk, retaining the lower back panel grille.  As you know these are far and few between, and on the rare occasion that I see them, about half have incorrect mounting hardware.   The gray or black plastic caps are not designed to "retain", they are just there for protection.

The four metal capped nuts used on Mustangs are:
376423-S100 for 67
382309-S100 for 70
384652-S100 for 71-73
45277-S36 for 69, 70, 71-73
For specific applications, quantity and other information, look the part numbers up in the Library, "Mustang Hardware Spreadsheet (your years of interest)".
