1970 Mach with 351 Cleveland Vin Location
« on: March 06, 2022, 11:51:37 PM »
Is there a VIN stamp on 1970 351 Cleveland Mach 1 engines? If so, where is it?

Is the a VIN stamp on the automatic transmission?

Yes to both of your questions.

What plant was the car built at?  And which transmission?

Like other years and application location and style can differ

Typical 351C VIN can be found on the back of the driver's side head or on the block just below the head.
There's a weird little trapezoid shaped area that they are often stamped at.

FMX transmission stamp should be on the cast iron section in a few possible locations.

Mine - did not have an engine no and all codes on block show correct period. Read somewhere on forums this could have been missed on occasion

Not sure that a missing or skipped VIN  (a Federal requirement) was very possible given the numbers of inspectors at San Jose. Would not want to get fined if nothing else.  Of course another possibility is an early warranty replacement.

Just for discussion was the transmission stamped as it should be? All transmissions were also required to get one

No Engine VIN? 351 C
« Reply #7 on: September 18, 2023, 12:26:46 AM »
NOTE: The following seven posted were merged with the earlier thread on the same subject - 351C VIN location during 1970 production

Hi,
Was it possible that ford sometimes skipped t0 label an engine no on the block?. I searched high and low but was never able to find this?

Thoughts?
Enclosed are some photos I found of casting no etc Although I admit some parts have been replaced(looks like starter motor is a combo of 72/76 however the block and tranny def appear to match the car of 70.
Scheduled build date 11/12/69
actual build date 11/17/69
serialised 10/31/69
ordered 8/26/69

Are you looking for the casting number? That should be on the right rear of the block where the starter is.
(The VIN should be on the left rear just below the head. A replacement block would not nave a VIN.)

Engine at the back of the block is blank. However casting no look period correct.
Just asking if ford company skipped these engine no stamps at the back of the block on occasion?

Vin stamping on the engine was required by law. Its possible you not looking in the right place, the vin is lightly stamped or covered by paint or rust.

Intresting.... I have had several mechanics look over. Especially when engin was rebuilt and removed from the car. No engine No was found. Engine was stripped and rebuilt and paint stripped for repainting etc
