« on: March 03, 2022, 03:38:08 PM »
Hi all. I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I am in the UK and recently purchased a 68 390 GT. I have just finished on re building the engine and am now in the trunk were i could please do with some help.

1, Can anyone please tell me if carpet was a factory option?
2, What finish was the trap door handle?
3, was the spare wheel a space saver or a full size wheel?

These photos are of the car and the engine bay to date.

Adam (I assume),
Welcome to the forum.
Some answers:
1, Can anyone please tell me if carpet was a factory option?
In the trunk - no. It was a vinyl mat.
2, What finish was the trap door handle?
Semigloss black
3, was the spare wheel a space saver or a full size wheel?
I believe it was full size.
And where in the UK, North, South, East, West?
Jim

The trunk mat material varies, depending on the assembly plant and build date. Many cars received a burtex trunk mat

Not sure what you mean by trap door handle

1968 spares were full size (except 24 pre-production cars)

Shouldn't the trap door handle in trunk be phosphate and oil?

Yup. That's the piece attached to the trap door. The piece on the RH door frame is semi-gloss black.

Yes, that part is usually unpainted, phosphate coated.

In 1968 the space saver spare was a factory option. A rare one.

adam8888d- Welcome to the site. Hope you find the support and information helpful in your concours related needs

- As mentioned there are a number of different possibilities for factory style of mats. Just depends on when and where your car was built. None of them were a vinyl mat like used in 65-66. The vinyl style ones had a jute backing and there were different patterns of the vinyl again depending on what plant and time period typically

- Full size spare would have been your original style. Your Marti report will show if your specific car had something else but not much chance of that.

Yes, that part is usually unpainted, phosphate coated.

+1 They tested out as Phosphate and oil - Not painted
