Exhaust bezel and tail light box questions
« on: January 20, 2022, 03:17:11 PM »
My GT500 has a 1/26/67 production date. I have one rear light assembly off so far and have two questions. First, with my production date, should I have the cut in half 1966 chrome exhaust bezel mounted on my rear valance or the 1968 Cougar bezel  shown here at:

Second, I have an enclosed tail light box shown here in the pictures. Is this correct or should I have the open box?

Follow up third question. The car had one repaint in the 1980's. Don't ask me how, but the painter sprayed primer on the reflective lens and gasket, covered 100% of the reflector yet the red lenses were out and untouched. The primer has some peeling from the reflective lens but it won't come off totally by fingernail or plastic body filler spreader. Any thoughts besides just buying a new one? I prefer to keep originals.

I wasn't sure if Shelby used something in 1967 that was later adopted by Cougar in 1968 and could be used by us today rather than cut a GT bezel in half

67 Shelby used 67 Cougar housings. 68 Shelby used 68 Cougar housings.

Shelby stopped using the bezel around the time your car was built. It would most likely have had the cut in half style.

Thanks. Is the closed or open box appropriate?

Yes  . It was a transition time so I am hesitant to apply a absolute.

See no reason to question the taillight boxes your car has presently..

Running changes both at Ford and Shelby are a challenge for owners and builders of 67's many more than any other year Shelby and few took place (the change over) at the same time as others

Thanks. Finally, if I can't remove the primer from the silver reflector area, where best do I find replacements? I do not see one at NPD or West Coast Cougar. The bulb holes are in a different place.

I guess I could always use high gloss metallic chrome spray from a rattle can

There is a product (think its Krylon brand) used to make/coat rural mail boxes reflective. Its mentioned in the Shelby and California special taillight panel restoration article
