68 San Jose 390 GT Alt Brackets
« on: January 16, 2022, 05:12:38 PM »
I finally have everything I need to put it back together correctly.  Since I have no frame of reference of correct, a couple of questions.  I did get the correct alt/smog brackets for alternator
1. What is the correct alternator spacer length on SMOG cars? Mine looks to be 1-9/16"
2. On the water pump, does the lower alt bracket go in front or behind that top bracket? (I Assume they share the same bolt?)
3. On the lower bracket for the Alt, does it get bolted from the back?

OEM manual does not show.  Any source for a better illustration?

Chris

Don't have one handy to measure. The measurement might be in the MPC. It was dyed a pinkish color and like the other details was shared with the 428CJ so that will help with most of your detailing questions related to this area of the car

2. On the water pump, does the lower alt bracket go in front or behind that top bracket? (I Assume they share the same bolt?)
3. On the lower bracket for the Alt, does it get bolted from the back?

Guessing that #2 & #3 are referring to the alternator adjustment arm or bracket. Correct?

Will see if I have any of these details in questions from a San Jose example likely the same as other plants but you never know as there are some other differences on your engine when you compare to Dearborn or NJ built 390's and CJ that year if I recall correctly. Lots of stuff in the way with the engine in the cars and all the other parts in the way

Don't have a copy of the electrical section of the 68 Assembly Manual but looking at 69 one and other pictures it appears as follows. If the arms don't set in place and don't need to be twisted or forced then that should confirm. If they do check back.

2. On the water pump, does the lower alt bracket go in front or behind that top bracket? (I Assume they share the same bolt?)

The lower adjusting arm would connect to and be forward (on top) of the smog pump and alternator mounting plate

3. On the lower bracket for the Alt, does it get bolted from the back?

The adjusting arm at the alternator should be on the rearward side (once mounted) of the alternator lug hole

Hope this helps

Thanks for the feedback.  A picture says a 1000 words, should have done this from the start!
Im assuming
#1  the lower alt bracket goes behind  the alt mounting plate to address the gap
#2 is for the smog pump bracket (waiting on)
The reason I asked about the spacer is due to the gaps as shown.
If assumptions are nearly correct then it is the correct alt spacer in pink.

As mentioned hard to get nice clear pictures on my part when the pictures I have are typically with engines in the car fully assembled but found a few examples with the smog pump not installed as well as a few others that might help as a basis for some details

Yellow arrow in this first one shows where the thermactor pump mounting bolt is inserted when everything is in place

Yellow arrow in this picture below just highlights the bracket since its at an odd angle. Lower bolt and spacer are for the alternator

Basic somewhat generic Ford diagram from the late 60's FE alternator and thermactor pump mounting of a 69 MPC

And an example from a later year on a restored engine

Jeff I wanted to point out before someone starts down the wrong path that the Ford diagram apparently is misleading . I know you know this but for others reading the alternator does not need a flat washer ,lock washer and nut to hold the alternator adjusting bolt as the illustration indicates. The alternator housing is threaded so a additional fastener is not needed. I can not think of a FE application that uses this diagram as is.

Good point and one of the reasons I mentioned that it was a generic drawing but always good to emphasize the point

Maybe the hardware was used on an early 60's application

Maybe this will help? For P/S the only difference is the crank pulley, which is shown on a separate page.

That helps.   Lower alternator bracket sits ontop.  Thanks

The ASM pic is showing the adjustment bracket on the front side of the alternator.
Previous pics show it on the back.

If you want things to work properly then use the adjustment bracket on the front side. This is were it typically is seen in the real world on running engines.
