Help with Heater core replacement
« on: March 03, 2011, 11:53:29 PM »
Friend of mine has an 84 SVO and his heater core is leaking. Temporarily he bypassed it so that it won't leak inside. Now he needs to get a new core and install it. How big of a job is this? Are we looking at tearing apart the entire dash to get at it? He doesnt have a manual so I guess is there any place he can get the info on a step by step of doing thiis job. He's a notch above a shade tree mechanic so feels he's competant enough to do the job himself. Thanks for any input.

Yes, it's a big job.  The whole dash has to be, at a minimum, unfastened and tilted up on the RH side of the car.  The A/C system also has to be discharged before doing the job.  Would highly recommend acquiring a shop manual and follow the procedure.  Probably plenty of info on this on the web too, maybe with some shortcuts included.

Is there anyone who has a manual who would be so kind as to. Scan it and e-mail the pages which apply to this task?

I would also suggest POSTING location/contact info - as the SVO community in that area has people (that have doe the job before) and might help !   (some even know the things NOT TO DO - compared to manuals)

The manual probably will not help much.  First time, plan on 8 hours.  Some say they can do it in 2-3 hours.  The hardest part is getting to the right bolts and screws.  There are write ups and detailed instructions on Foureyedpride and svoca.  The ac does not have to be discharged but it is a tight fit to get to things.  Don't plan on takiing everything out and working on it outside the car.  Take your time and do it in the car.  Word of warning, use a Ford heater core.  After market heater cores fail and it's not a job you will want to do again anytime soon even with a lifetime warranty on the part.  Non-ac cars are totally different and probably take 30 minutes.
