Sources for 390 4V Thermactor Pump & bracket

There is light at the end of the tunnel, with many thanks to Bob, Jeff, and numerous members of this forum. 
I obtained the correct pulleys and belts for my 68 GT 390.  Next step is to find a source for Thermactor pump and brackets.
How difficult is it to remove the plugs in the manifold?

Guessing that you mean plugs in the cylinder heads? I normally hit them with Aero Kroil and let them sit for an hour or so, then use a socket with a 1/2" air impact. Sometimes the factory Ford plugs are used, other times they are Allen head socket type screws, sometimes pipe plugs. So you need to clean up the holes with a tap afterwards.

Chris,the plugs in the heads are not typically easy to remove I am sorry to report. It also may have to do with what kind of plugs are used. Factory 390/428 solid hex plugs are typically easier relatively speaking easier to remove then Allen head plugs for instance. A tight fitting socket is critical to not round off the hex plug sides. There are a number of YouTube videos on how to remove rusty bolts. One of the common denominators is intense heat ,more so then a propane torch can provide.Think mapp/oxygen or acetylene. https://www.lowes.com/pd/BernzOmatic-Cutting-Welding-and-Brazing-Torch-Kit/50126405 Along with the heat some use things like candle wax or penetrating oil to wick down the threads while still hot before trying to break loose. I agree with the candle wax approach.  I have had good results using this, even removing the water jacket drain plugs in FE blocks.

In most cases your going to need to post wanted ads around the internet, watch Ebay and seek out through other sources. Original pumps can often be rebuilt and watch for the later style pumps that have been faked to look somewhat like the originals.

On the positive side there were allot of cars built with the parts you need. The down side is few kept the parts over time

Never had to use heat or wax. The air impact and Aero Kroil work nicely. Good quality tools pay for themselves, dozens of sets of FE heads done this way over the years.


Don't waste your time with an electric impact. Not enough power in the ones I have tried. If an air impact isn't available use a 24" breaker bar.

Im a big fan of Kroil. Looks like factory Hex plugs, so that is the first time something is working in my favor.
Following up on a few messages for the parts.

This is a real long shot, but I believe that the pumps were made by GM. I don't remember much more than that so I can't say anything about interchangeability.

As for parts many of the ones you are likely looking for are for sale all the time on Ebay if you know what your looking for - part numbers and such things.
Getting your hands a little dirty can often save you some $$$'s  :)

I highly recommend him.  Just had one done and it's flawless.
