As a reminder for all (standard boiler plate warning
Paint marks will not make a non-factory looking part more original nor will the usage of paint marks make up for a non-factory finish or other detail
For a
Apr 2 68 completed GT/CS 289 with PS, PDB, and a 3 speed with a VIN likely around 8R01C155xxx
Here's what I still need:
- Paint markings for the front and rear springs?
- Paint marks on the steering box?
Taken from C code buildsheets like your vehicle built before and after your car
Front springs - One red and one yellow stripe
Rear springs - One silver stripe
Shocks - Red daub on each
Driveline identification - Three stripes - Lavender, Dark green, light green
As for the steering box consider that the top of the steering box was likely covered, from the top and dripping down the sides, during a "black out" process where a worker passed a wide brush with black paint over the top surface. This process could cover the areas where the paint marks could have been applied fully or partially. Examples of 68 San Jose built cars with the black out can be seen in that thread I mentioned in the last post and in the picture below.
With that said as far as 68 examples I can offer the following based on what I've seen and documented.
In these examples you can make out a large paint daub or swipe under the black out paint where it has chipped or worn off
Also often find during this period a white daub of paint over the main case and plug on the lower front end (as the box is installed in the car)
Examples and description of general paint marks, usage and applications is available in an article posted in the Library section of the site
Hope this helps
