Topic: 64.5 D Engine Decal

I?m getting ready to sell an unassembled 64.5 Mustang Convertible (5F08D156472) and I?d like to make sure these two decals are correct for this engine BEFORE I attach to breather.

The CI decal was not used, FRONT is ok.  There was also usually the white 'Use Genuine FoMoCo Replacement Parts...' rectangular decal on the LH side of the air cleaner.  On the top, lid, it might have had a crank case ventilation decal.


The snorkel heat riser, attached to the RH exhaust manifold, should be the curved style. 


There are some other details if you want additional feedback.

BTW, a D code engine was not premium fuel, that was the A code.  D codes were lower compression ratio.


I haven't seen an A code CI decal without the black/white checker flag pattern.

Just a few items based on the pics provided:


-Snorkel wing nuts incorrect, they originally didn't have the indents
-Take the bolt off the intake where a tag attaches on later year cars.  The engine tag would have attached at the temp sender unit on 64.5 V8
-Remove decal from fuel line
-Stainless steel lines not original
-Fuel line clamp at water pump, the base should be painted black with the engine
-Eaton P/S pump usually natural, but black accepted
-Oversize screws at generator shield.  They should be 5/16" head hex screws
-Heat riser as mentioned, should be curved.  Existing snorkel may not work with a curved riser
-Need correct valve cover gaskets, NPD has them, with tabs that line up
-Coil wire boot at distributor is incorrect, should look like the rest of the wire boots
-Distributor vacuum advance attaching screws were usually flat top, not domed
-Fuel pump should be screw-together type
-Oil filter should be double crimp




Guessing you probably know the 2nd line of the choke tube setup is missing, and the clip

The riser is incorrect, it should have a bend in the tube.


I may be wrong, but if the correct riser is installed, it won't work with the snorkel you have.

There are 2 kinds of heat risers... you want the one with more metal on the bottom.  There was a revision of the RH exhaust manifold later on (late 65, early 66?) that added a reinforced section which makes the earlier risers incompatible.  The later ones have a notch cut out.


They are dated like the snorkel and air cleaner bases too... if you want to go that far.

My knowledge of the earlier cars is fairly sparse, so this question is just to educate myself a bit more.
I noticed the fuel line base bracket that attaches to the water pump (not the screw or bent holder) is not painted.
In 67 this part was painted with the engine. This would have been an engine plant item, not a factory engine build up line, right?

Do we know when this changed?

The base should be painted block color like later cars.  The 64.5 one is unique as it's a different shape and uses a machine thread screw.
