Window crank knob replacement
« on: October 26, 2021, 01:30:35 PM »
I have bought new knobs for the 70' window cranks (originals are gone). I am wondering the best way to replace these? Maybe using a vice to push the screw-rivet into the knob?? Hammer the rivet whilst the knob is on a soft material?

Also, does the wave washer go under the knob or under the screw-rivet side?

Thanks for a reply..

I've always used a vise so that I can keep everything in line easier and apply the pressure more equally compared to the hammer idea thought I likely did that in a rush at least once. Believe I used a thin 1/2" piece of scrap wood and a cloth between the jaw and the soft knob. Doesn't take allot of pressure and of course the knob should not be ice cold.

Can't recall the location of the washer at the moment sure someone else will since these were used for many years on Ford products

Logically, the wavy washer would be placed between the knob and the arm to act as a bearing.

I use a C-Clamp. It focuses the energy better than a vise. Try it once and you won't use a vice ever again for this.

I've used a (Harbor Freight) one ton arbor press to press in the pin in a handle knob (I can't remember what or when) as well as a bench mounted rivet tool. I made adapters to accommodate any other uses.

I looked at both crank assemblies on my mach and neither had a washer visible. Maybe this was a service item thing? But I would definitely think it would go between the knob and the handle, not between the rivet and handle.

Thanks everyone, all good info! I will try the C clamp since I have that readily available. Washer between the knob and handle, makes sense.
