68 Wiper Motor Finish
« on: October 12, 2021, 05:33:43 AM »
NOTE: The following posts were separated from a Members build thread as the subject sort of took off and appeared to be a good stand alone topic. So by placing it in the section it will be easier to find and viewable by members and non-members alike. Enjoy

I was originally going to leave my wiper motor unpainted as that is how I found it on my car, but have decided to paint it instead. I think that the stamp will show up much better that way and I have not seen any other photos of a wiper motor unpainted. Not sure if the paint just disappeared over time or if it just got very little paint applied when painted.

I don't think the paint evaporated over time . The paint could be super thin but still would show some indication of having been there. I have seen items that had surface rust over the entire surface which made them appear like they had not had any paint on them but in reality the rust underneath cause the paint to flack off.  That would not be the case on a partially surface rust covered item .You were not specific on the condition of the surface prior . It would not be typical for the motor housing not to be painted . With that said that just means the ones that were not painted are few and far between. Certainly a non painted one is not in the never ever realm. I think painting it is the prudent decision.

The tell tell sign that would document if there were any bare steel ones would be the visible presence of the ink stamping on the  bare metal surface.

Never seen one unpainted but I don't claim to have seen all of them either. Here's one I restored (this is the before picture) and installed recently. Actual build date of the car was June 15, 1968. It looked really nice until I plastered the firewall and the heater motor with sound deadener LOL!.

Thanks Bob. I should have posted a photo of how I found the motor. Here is a photo of when I removed it from the car.

OK sorry I posted a picture of a heater blower motor - the one you have pictured is a W/W motor. Sorry! No pictures of that.

What is interesting is that there seems to be no remnants of black paint and the stamp is clearly visible

Ford tended to leave parts unpainted under the dash. I've never seen one like yours but it sure looks like it was unpainted originally.

Thanks Royce. I am trying to determine if I should paint it or not. It looked unpainted to me, but it did have a bit of surface rust on it. Perhaps Bob is right about how the paint disappeared. I was planning on leaving it bare metal, but now considering painting it. I always defer to the experts when in doubt

I thought I had seen unpainted ones, when I checked my parts I found three unpainted ones. Two were very rusty but the one was very nice with the C7 number stamp clearly visible. I have no doubt that some were never painted.

For 65-66, the 1sp wiper motors were unpainted like the one in the pics.  2sp were black bottom.  Interestingly, the brackets the motors attach to are even different for 1sp/2sp for those years also.
