70 Eliminator Build Sheet question
« on: October 12, 2021, 10:56:15 PM »
I'm redoing the rear end in a 70 Cougar 428/4 speed Eliminator built on September 29, 1969 in Dearborn.  I searched this site but I can't find any info that will help me understand what the codes for paint marks are.  I'm interested in the Rear Sway Bar paint mark.  The build sheet shows a X.  I see rear shocks should have a pink paint mark.  Would that be 1 or 2 stripes?  I believe according to the sheet the rear leaf springs should have 2 Violet and 2 Yellow marks on each spring.  I'd also like some assistance on the driveshaft markings.   Is there a list somewhere that translates these codes?

Shocks were marked with a paint daub. It sort of looks like a old rag was used, dipped in paint. Marks are not consistent in size or shape because they are so crudely applied.

Same goes for the stripes on the drive shaft. It appears the drive shaft was being rotated by hand in a drive shaft lathe while the worker applied the paint stripe using a 1/2" brush. Very sloppy, sometimes dry brushed and sometimes drippy.

This is a chart of known Cougar drive shaft codes. Most came from the MPC, others from looking at cars.

Notice that your build sheet colors for the drive shaft are different from 1969 and I don't have any source for yours but Dave Wyras might.

If you scroll to the last post there is a spreadsheet of all the manual transmission Cougar driveshaft markings I have been able to compile from buildsheets. Some of them are buildsheets I found posted on the web and some are from Jeff Speegle?s collection of build sheets.

Well that is semi-helpful but I still don't have a clue what the LXMGWH colors would be.  LOL.  This is a 70 Q Code 428 CJ.  0F91Q5098xx

Contact Dave. If your Eliminator Registrar doesn't know then probably no one does.

As far as shock markings you start to see the introduction of markings applied with a spray can or gun as well as the earlier method of using a 1/2 wide paint brush to apply a small or fairly small ;) daub at the bottom of the bottom section as shown in some other threads as well in the Library in the Article about basic paint markings

Lets start with the basics

What transmission and what was the approx build date for the car?  Also since its a CJ is it a SCJ?

In this way we can possibly look at other examples from the same period and see if it might be a mis-print or if we have pictures from similar cars to backwards decode.

It's a 1970 Mercury Cougar Eliminator.  It's a Q code, which is a 428 CJ.  It was optioned with the Ram Air setup.  It has the close ratio 4 speed and a Traction Lock 3.00 rear end.  The car was built in Dearborn on Sept. 29, 1969.

Thanks that will help.

Looking at other 70 Q code 4 speed Cougars (non SCJ) I found the color coding for that specific driveline as follows - LBOGWH

First I didn't find any real late buildsheets to compare to you cars build date all are from earlier in the year. For earlier production 4 speeds with CJ or SCJ I found buildsheets and their color coding for the drivelines are different from the your cars buildsheet shows - LXMGWH

Believe the "X" and the "M" are misprints just like the other one mentioned below. Just someone really sloppy that day entering the information.

There is a mistake in the color coding of the front shocks on your buildsheet which shows "WHITS" which I believe is a misprint after comparing approx one hundred 1970 buildsheets with white marked front shocks called out

Hopes this solves the mystery and helps

Jeff, so I guess you've seen many other examples of typos on the build sheet?  So LBOGWH would be Light Blue, Orange and White?  I appreciate your help.  If you want my full build sheet I can send it via email or through FB Messenger.

No have seen few misspellings but at this point with this example it sees to be to be the only explanation

The X for the rear sway bar probably is just an indicator that the vehicle was to receive one. I have seen other build sheets without obvious errors that had an X under the rear sway bar.

Believe the focus of the question by the Op was line C boxes 18-23 Edit: I was corrected below  :-[

Yes D 17 is for the rear sway bar

I'm interested in the Rear Sway Bar paint mark.  The build sheet shows a X.
OP asked if this was a paint code and no one addressed that question.
